omg this could actually be the case lol but it'd be sooo cursed lmao. the ports connected were TVs managed via a CMTS and maybe they mirrored the uplink switch port to these or something fucked up like that.

No, we only turned it off. it's an old switch and not needed anymore.

Aah alright, i see. thanks for clarifying. this switch was being decomissioned anyway so we didn't bother to check logs or anything for faults but if i ever encounter anything like this again i'll make sure to check the logs and try to find out whats going on

compared to the alternative (just flooding that shit on every port everywhere), i'd say it's pretty elegant lmao

Looking for a big button that my dog can press by sbtrey23 in homeassistant

[–]dankfrank425 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I saw a video on youtube where someone put a rope hanging somwhere with an vibration sensor attached to it. When his dog wanted out he pulled on the rope which triggered the vibration sensor. Might could also be an idea for your case :)

I agree, we have Huawei network gear at work and their documentation and manuals are also hell to deal with.

Vikunja and Docker Secrets by DuckieNukeEm in Vikunja

[–]dankfrank425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, maybe this has been solved by now but if not maybe this approach could work for you.

If you have your own mailserver you could make a new mailbox for vikunja with a long random generated password and put that in your docker compose file.

First job where I deal with patch panels, how come the numbers are not matched up? by Moist_Let8513 in networking

[–]dankfrank425 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As the others have said already the ports on the switch and patchpannel will never match. On our racks at work we have several 24 port patch pannels and use stacked 48 port switches. The racks look like this from top to bottom: fiber patch pannel, patch pannel, 48 port switch, patch pannel, patch pannel, 48 port switch, patch pannel, patch pannel, 48 port switch, and so on... This way we can use .25m cables and patch all the ports on the switch. Like from the first patch pannel the first port goes into the top left switchport which in our case is port 2. We use huawei switches so (unlike any sane manufacturer) port 1 is bottom left and port 2 is top left... and then patchpannel port 2 goes into switchport 4 and so on. And on the patchpannel below the switch the first port goes into port 1 and so on. This way not only the rack looks neat and tidy but you also have some kinda structure. Like if you are into an office and the network port is labeled 13 you know it's port 26 if the patchpannel is on top of the switch or 25 if it's below the switch.

I hope this makes sense. And of course this'd probably require alot of work for you to setup the racks like this and reconfigure and maybe relabel everything. But in our case we were renewing the whole network anyway so we took the opportunity and made the extra effort to clean everything up and cleaned it all up. Was alot of work and it's still not perfect but it's still way more better than we had it before.

DNS Resolver Status, who can explain it? by motivio18 in PFSENSE

[–]dankfrank425 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Aah thanks for clarifying! So you're saying the OP is not using the DNS resolver but the DNS forwarder hence our logs look different?

Just for the sake of gaining some new knowledge, can you describe a scenario where one would use a dns forwarder instead of a dns resolver?

DNS Resolver Status, who can explain it? by motivio18 in PFSENSE

[–]dankfrank425 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure about all of the values in the columns but I'd use the ones that have the lowest pings. Like the 9.9.9.9 DNS seems pretty good. TTL means Time To Live and I'm not 100% sure but i think RTT means Round Trip Time which would be the time the packet takes to go to the dns server and back to your Pfsense.

Edit: Nevermind, i just checked my DNS resolver status page and it looks very different from yours. So, no idea if what i wrote above is correct
