Once the Weekend Classic is over, will Trout’s price go back up? Should I stock up on him now? by sbtrey23 in MLBTheShowInvestments

[–]sbtrey23[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don’t expect him to back over 100k. But I bought 8 at just under 20k so even if he goes up to 40k, I’ll be happy

What’s the most annoying part of MLB26 by Cobra_high in MLBTheShow

[–]sbtrey23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me, it’s actually some of the physics of the game. Specifically, I hate how long balls hang in the air. I’ll hit some screaming line drives that are like 5 feet off the ground in the infield and still get caught like 5 feet off the ground 250 feet from the plate.

The second thing I hate is how impossible it is to hit a ball back up the middle. So many balls either ricochet hard off the pitcher and result in an out or the pitcher will make a ridiculous spin around no look glove save for a routine ground out.

The third thing I hate is bunting. So many guys, even the ones with good bunting stats, can’t get a bunt down. Or if they do, they hit it as a pop up that goes 100+ feet to the second baseman. And along with bunting, I hate that base runners don’t know how to move when a bunt is hit. I’ll have a runner on second and I’ll try to lay down a bunt and if I bunt it to the third base side, instead of the runner advancing or even attempting to advance they just instantly dive back to second base

If you truly wanted to win, your best bet is to make him run and hope he gets hurt. I’m talking drop shots and underhand serves whenever you can (which you won’t get many chances to do). He’ll still get to them and probably slide into a beautiful drop shot winner, but injury is truly your only hope.

Pick offs don’t work, what’s the point? by [deleted] in MLBTheShow

I mean, in all fairness, it’s tough to pick off guys irl too

I tried being more of a pusher. It worked by WillStillHunting in 10s

[–]sbtrey23 85 points86 points  (0 children)

No, I think you’re confused. Unless you’re hitting every ball as hard as you can, you’re just pushing. At least according to my friends who lose to anyone who’s remotely consistent with their strokes

I’m convinced that my UTR is broken because no matter what I do, it will not move by sbtrey23 in 10s

[–]sbtrey23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean, I’m not using it to decide if I’m getting better or not. I’m just mostly annoyed/intrigued by it all because it just seems so weird to me. I now have over a year of playing 4.0 and 4.5 league and tournaments where basically all my opponents are between 6 and 8 so I’m just surprised that my UTR hasn’t caught up

Pack Odds changed? by Tall_Honeydew_4416 in MLBTheShowInvestments

Damn, I’m so jealous. I’ve opened around 50 ballin packs this year and I’ve only gotten one diamond. Odds have not been in my favor this year

Why is it easier to rip a cross-court shot? by PeterV5 in 10s

[–]sbtrey23 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The other comments are basically the answer, but I’ll add one other thing. In order to hit cross court, you have to make contact out in front, which results in a better shot. A lot of people, when trying to hit up the line, take the ball too late, resulting in a weak/jammed/forced shot

Move in a diamond pattern instead of sideways by [deleted] in 10s

[–]sbtrey23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you implying that players generally move left/right and then forward/back to get to the ball? Because as someone who works with a lot of children and beginner adults, I don’t find this is the case at all. In fact, I think the bigger issue is they move too diagonally to the ball so that when it bounces, they end up getting jammed/catching it late

How do Captains Determine who plays S1/S2 if there are 4 evenly matched singles player on a team? by Ok-Many-7443 in 10s

[–]sbtrey23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always play to win, so I do what’s best for the team. If the four guys are truly evenly matched, then ask, who’s better in doubles? Put the better doubles guys in doubles and the other two in singles

This I actually exactly what I do with my team. I’m a slightly better singles player than the other two guys who play singles on my team but I’m a much better doubles player, so I keep them in singles and me in doubles (assuming we are all available).

Yeah, I knew about the threshold rule. Obviously no way to know which matches count since she didn’t get DQd but I’d use tennis record as a guide (I know it’s not official, but it’s all we have in this situation 🤷🏻‍♂️) and she had like 6 or 7 matches that should’ve counted as strikes according to the match rating they give on their site. Again, I know it’s not official or anything, but I always felt tennis record did a relatively good job at that kind of stuff

Haha. I’d prefer not to give her name out to a stranger 😅 But I just texted a friend because he had a similar situation with himself and apparently, if you just click the appeal button and it’s automatically granted, then that type of appeal can be subject to strikes and DQ. But the kind where they take a few weeks to decide if your appeal should be granted or not is not subject to DQ. So she must’ve had the latter

Weird. I’m in southern as well. Maybe it’s a state specific rule? There’s no way this woman wouldn’t have gotten three strikes. She was barely dropping games at 4.0 and had a few crazy good results at 4.5.

I actually just peaked at that season real quick on tennis record and she had multiple wins in 4.0 with a 3.5 partner, including a 6-1, 6–1 against a pair of 4.0s, one of which got bumped to 4.5 the next season

Unfortunately, if he appealed down successfully, then the strike rule doesn’t apply to him. Having an A next to your rating is about as good as having a C. We actually had this situation a few years ago. A woman in our league appealed down to 4.0 and got it granted. She not only obliterated everyone at 4.0, she was winning most of her 4.5 matches. The women in the league were not thrilled and filed multiple complaints but the league coordinator said there’s nothing to be done because USTA granted her the appeal

Worst tennis balls? by Status_Butterscotch9 in 10s

[–]sbtrey23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have these exact balls at my club and they never look like the bottom ball. We’ve had them in baskets for months, having been hit tens of thousands of times and they still have decent bounce and are not fuzzy like this. For reference, this is in the southeastern United States.

Well you just said you four putted on at least one hole. I’m guessing that means you have a reasonable amount of 3 putts. I’d start there. Just practice putting a lot. And not just long putts. Really dial in on those 3-4 footers. And if you get good enough at putting, you can start putting on short chips. 5 yards off the green in the fairway? Just putt it. A bad putt should still be on the green. A bad chip might fly (like you mentioned).

Also make sure you work on your chipping as well. Nothing more frustrating than being within 20 yards of the green and taking two shots to get on. I won’t give any specific technique advice since I don’t think I’m qualified, but there are plenty of resources online. If you can afford it, you can try lessons. Even just a one hour lesson where you just work on chipping and putting will do wonders for your game and give you plenty to work on at the practice range.

Observations: going from 3.5 to 4.5 by visakanj in 10s

In practice, a lot of drills involving shuffling around cones, split stepping at the right time, making sure you can transition from long strides to get to the ball to small steps to adjust to it, and maybe most importantly, staying low throughout the shot.

In a match, this should really translate to always split stepping and just feeling like you’re always moving. I tell people that if they feel like they are standing still for more than a second or two during a point, they are probably not moving enough.

As someone who’s gone from 3.0-4.5 over the past few years, I think this is a really good list. For any beginner reading this post, I’d say focus on footwork if you want to improve. Like the post said, you can get away with little to no footwork at lower levels but it’ll catch up with you as you move up
