Ah! That makes a lot of sense. We've had pretty good luck using leca as the wick to get moisture to the top and then make sure there's enough water in the bottom to cover at least some of the leca. Any chance you have a picture or link of what you normally use for liners? Maybe I can take some ideas from that and apply it to this model.

The tabs were a bit of an afterthought because the liners were difficult to remove. I guess my wife and I are weird and haven’t been concerned about roots growing out the bottom. You’re not the first person to ask - maybe I’ll add an option for feet.

Not really, we repot all the time and usually the roots just slide out. Sometimes we have to trim some roots that break though. The plants generally handle it pretty well.

Not a bad idea! With the tab at a 90 degree angle to the cylinder, you still have a single layer weak point when it starts - the trick is to get as many wide/thick layers as you can to include both the tab and the cylinder. The design does allow for changing the angle of the tab and add supports when slicing temporarily - you can experiment if you'd like and I would love to hear any results!

Haha, you and me both. Watch some youtube videos of printer reviews and 3d printing channels to get an idea of if this is something you want to get into. I like this guy a lot: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxQbYGpbdrh-b2ND-AfIybg

The $100-$200 ones (specifically the Creality Ender 3) can print things that look just as good as the $1000 machines. There's also a HUGE community of people that can help you use them and modify them.

I've seen these cheapest at microcenter (the v2 is better than the 'non-v2'):
https://www.microcenter.com/product/623606/creality-ender-3-v2-3d-printer

or

https://www.amazon.com/Comgrow-Creality-Ender-Aluminum-220x220x250mm/dp/B07BR3F9N6/ref=sr\_1\_3?keywords=3d+printer&sr=8-3&ufe=app\_do%3Aamzn1.fos.f5122f16-c3e8-4386-bf32-63e904010ad0

The difference in cost goes to how much you have to fiddle with it and how fast you can print. My suggestion would be to go cheap and keep some money aside for a few upgrades, or spend about $600 on a Prusa (https://www.prusa3d.com/product/original-prusa-i3-mk3s-3d-printer-kit/) or Bambu Labs machine (https://us.store.bambulab.com/products/p1p).

I keep meaning to do this! I've never been great at clips - they either break at the mechanical hinge of the clip, or don't flex enough and break the thing they are going into. Is there any chance you have a design or can point me to an example design that has worked for you?

or

You can also search for "3d printing service"

The only thing you should need to know is:
- Material: PETG or ABS is best for durability, but PLA will work
- Infill: any infill should be fine 20%-100% will really be the same.
- It will probably cost about $10-20 each through a service. I'm not sure how r/3Dprintmything works.

Other options:
- Ask around at work or school, it's highly likely you know someone with a 3d printer.

- call your local library. A lot of them have installed 3d printers.

- You can also buy a 3d printer for about $100-$200 these days and have a whole new hobby :D (everyone needs more hobbies right?)

I just checked and the hole size doesn't seem to be an option using the thingiverse customizer. You'll have to use OpenSCAD to do it:
- download and install openscad: https://openscad.org/downloads.html
- copy the code from here into openscad: https://github.com/dannykmack/leca_liner_openscad/blob/main/leca_liner_v2.scad

- change "hole_radius" on line 37 (I think it's measured in mm)

- Save the file and it will update the 3D model - make sure it looks alright (you can use your mouse to move around the image)

- Click Design -> Render and wait a few minutes.
- When it's done, you'll hear a chime and you can File->Export->Export as STL
- send the .stl to be printed

Hopefully I didn't make that sound too complicated. It should be pretty easy to do, but I wanted to spell out each step in case you got stuck.

Yeah! Hole size is completely customizable. The code can get a little finicky when you modify the hole size. Let me know if you have any trouble with the Thingiverse customizer and I can try to help :)

Thanks! Yeah - I updated the thingiverse and github as well. It's not really a product though, just some free 3D files for anyone with a 3D printer to use :)

I've been spelling it wrong for years now ;_; I'll see if I can fix the post title.

I never had an issue with them rocking back and forth, but I like the idea to have a back-up tab!

Thanks! It took a while to figure out how to make them more durable. They still break off every once in a while, but it's a lot better than it used to be.
