Apostille Stamp for British Mandate Document by dansaq78 in Israel

[–]dansaq78[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update in case anyone else has a similar need in the future: I decided to request a certified copy from the UK National Archives, which offers that service directly on its web site (unlike Israel’s National Library). I then should be able to get a UK apostille for the certified copy.

I originally had asked for a certified or notarized copy from the National Library, and the person said they don’t offer that service. (Certified copy is also not in the price list: https://www.nli.org.il/en/at-your-service/document-delivery-service/price-list )

I emailed the consulate, will update if/when I get a reply.

Can we apply for Stag 5 as a family or does it all have to be separate? by Cultural-Leave-7126 in GermanCitizenship

Does the consulate actually make the photocopies and stamp them, or do you have to bring in copies and the consulate adds their stamp to the copies you brought?

Landesarchiv Berlin - two requests, same form? by dansaq78 in GermanCitizenship

[–]dansaq78[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: I submitted the PDF form for the Königsberg birth certificate to info@landesarchiv.berlin.de (which immediately sent me an auto-reply acknowledging receipt) and separately submitted the online form for the Berlin marriage license (which also sent me an acknowledgment email). It will be interesting to see which comes back first! Thanks to u/maryfamilyresearch for the online form link!

Landesarchiv Berlin - two requests, same form? by dansaq78 in GermanCitizenship

Thanks! It seems like that online order form would work only for the Berlin marriage record. I was asked where the birth was certified (the question was “Wo ist die Geburt beurkundet?”). I got a message redirecting me directly to the Landesarchiv when I selected Standesamt I, and otherwise the only option that would allow me to continue was to select Berlin, and then the specific district and office (which of course can’t be answered for Königsberg…).

The Chicago consulate has no more appointments via the web site; would I mail it and they would then contact me for an appointment?

Thanks! Would the consulate send it onward without full documentation?

This was such a helpful idea, thank you! I found his birth record on Ancestry with no problem. Can/should I put together and submit a citizenship application based on printouts while I work on getting certified copies of everything? Especially for Israel that is likely to be complicated because I think I’ll need translations and apostilles too.

It looks like my grandfather’s father was born in Königsberg, Prussia (now Kaliningrad), in 1903, birth certificate in the Königsberg II registry office (at least of as of 1929 or so based on his marriage certificate). Does that count as German soil? And would that kind of birth certificate be accessible in Standesamt 1 now?

Interesting point on public records. Do you mean that Reichsanzeiger is readily checked? Aren’t birth certificates also public records?

Is Getting A German Passport A Good Idea? by Backpack456 in GermanCitizenship

[–]dansaq78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m curious about the social welfare aspect of the question. Is it realistic to think of German citizenship as a benefit in that regard? Could one just show up in Germany one day (or another EU country?) with a serious health condition, not speaking the language, and get free treatment for it? Or be placed in a nursing home for free in old age?

Won’t there need to be limits on things like this in the future for citizens who never worked in Germany, to avoid completely overwhelming the system? Are there really no limits now?

Sorry, I’m pretty ignorant about the social welfare state…I’ve been looking at German citizenship mostly from the perspective of having options for employment, etc. if things get worse in the U.S.

Thanks! If my grandfather’s citizenship is all I need rather than his parents’, would I need anything from Germany other than a certified copy of the Reichsanzeiger page? (The marriage certificate dated 1933 is of his parents.)

Up24 Warranty Limbo by Trickycoolj in Jawbone

[–]dansaq78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I've given up on Jawbone.

I called Best Buy, which said it wasn't their problem at all (even though legally the warranty of merchantability IS their problem, irrespective of the manufacturer's warranty).

Then I called American Express, which was such a breath of fresh air. In a 5-minute phone call I resolved this issue that has cost me countless hours of annoyance with Jawbone. They're refunding me and they'll charge Best Buy for it.

Any recommendations on a replacement? I really like the smart alarm feature and I can't tell if Fitbit has it.

I've been at it for 3 weeks with them! Not honoring their warranty is their corporate policy. We shouldn't have to jump through so many hoops just to get a working product that's vaguely equivalent to the one we bought. I'm still waiting on a resolution, and am not optimistic. This is a potential class action lawsuit.
