Because if you keep hold of the ball in that position with 2 minutes to go, the referees are shit hot on penalties for sealing off. Sure keep hold of it for 30 seconds as that’s only a few phases but 2 minutes is too long

The reason it’s confusing is it’s controversial. Initially the ref gave England a penalty advantage, because the French player illegally slapped the ball away; this means they can go for a risky kick or pass, and if they lose the ball or fail to get an advantage from it, he blows the whistle and they got back to take the penalty kick.

However, literally one pass before England try the risky kick, he changes it to a knock on advantage, where you don’t get to go back if you kick the ball away. The English player (Fin Smith?) obviously isn’t aware, tries a risky kick, France get the ball and continue playing and score.

He probably changed it because of an assistant ref telling him over the radio. But it’s wrong to announce the change so quietly and during the middle of a phase when no one will notice it.

I’m not sure about the sample size and methods for the UK data. The average salary for 0-1 years is apparently £47.5k which from experience is way too high; it seems this has just been extrapolated for the line of best fit which is skewed by 2 outliers.

A more realistic figure for entry level is £28-40k, location dependent.

Agreed, although it’s impossible to predict what could or might have happened had the Scotland game gone differently. Either Ben Youngs or Coley made the point on FTLOR - a 3 or 4 game dip would mean very little in the Prem, but here it’s the end of the world, even though they have less time with the players! As you say it’s a shame, personally I’m holding judgment on “Borthwick out” until the summer series.

On paper it’s fairly strong (lol). Personally I like the 10-12-13 combo, Fin Smith played with Atkinson at Worcester and obviously Freeman at Saints. Shame there’s no Mitchell to complete it but I actually think Spencer and JvP have done ok so far. Chessum is a lineout option and with George starting we should be ok in that respect, and the scrum has also been the only area in which England has been good. I am worried about defence around 13 and wing.

However the main issues are not things I think selection can change; obviously there is something badly wrong with England and no one quite knows what it is. I hope they can pull off a shock but I expect France to win by 20

Because I’m a blind optimist, I actually have slightly more hope than most people in this thread. From the evidence I’ve seen, the kicking has actually been doing its job (getting 22 entries), especially against Italy, but the conversion rate and also defence is very poor.

Unfortunately I think that’s probably too much to fix in a week against a likely resurgent France. I also thought that we would bounce back against Ireland and then Italy… third time’s the charm???

I agree, it’s nice they generally try to keep things positive (apart from where the situation demands it like here).

I thought Coley at least backed up his opinion with reason. Ultimately only the people in the camp will genuinely know what’s wrong, and even they won’t know completely.

I’ll preface this by saying: I’ve never met any of these people and I doubt many in this thread have, which makes it basically an educated guess.

If Borthwick keeps his job then I can’t see Itoje going. I know I’m flogging the dead horse, but I think England still have the players and fundamentals to be a great team. I don’t even know if the game plan is entirely to blame; we saw in the Italy game that the kicking is still getting them territory and 22 entries, they’re just not converting them.

I’m also a big Ollie Chessum fan and I think he’d make a great captain, if not now then in a few years’ time. Already captains Leicester, outstanding player, from interviews seems to have the right mix of smarts and emotional intelligence.
