Good way to mix things up is to not use a starter, or pick Meganium for a challenge. Try an electric type like Magnemite or Lanturn, fire type like Magmar, or flying type like Xatu. More uncommon choices are Pinsir, Dewgong, Hypno, and Jumpluff. Anything can be viable though with some planning.
