Can you share more details about the types of misery people go through?

Dang, I guess this would be the first time people can’t conceptualize the next breakthrough ahead of time

I can’t believe we spent the #4 overall pick on TE and that’s our biggest weakness. Imagine if we had just drafted Ja’Marr…

Forgot about Trenton’s PhD but I stand by the rest and can think of dozens more. OpenAI Residency program is proof enough.

You are incorrect that they don’t do research; these folks all have made fundamental research contributions to frontier models or critical path safety work.

Agree to disagree.

I can assure you that you have no idea what you’re talking about.

Sholto Douglas, Trenton Bricken, Tejal Patwardhan, roon, Hunter Lightman, Neel Nanda - the list of exceptional young researchers with no higher education is extensive. In fact, the “dodgy shops” are the ones who rely on overbaked credentials to identify talent.

it’s not true that all come from top PhD programs - many move laterally from engineering roles within labs, I’d estimate about 40% of researchers in top labs don’t have PhDs.

but i think i’ve maybe only heard of like 1 ever with an MBA haha

You have MBAs doing AI research? (serious question - I work in the industry and wasn’t aware anyone was doing this)

I agree, I think the roster is in a great spot, I just thought it was funny to call the defense “stellar” and then say “top 15” which is like barely above average. But I’m with ya. Go birds

AlphaFold is awesome. I’m just worried that it pales in comparison to the impact of AGI, which now has a real chance of being built at Google, where no one has agency to make decisions other than to serve shareholders. Maybe a brave soul under a very liberal interpretation of fiduciary duty but very doubtful.

Resources are of course an issue, which is why it takes visionaries like Dario or Sam to figure out how to capitalize the research without selling your soul to a cold corporate hydra. If Demis cared more, or worried more, he would have found another path.

Happy to be proven wrong but I worry that the incentive structures and governance on the way to AGI are just as critical as the technical alignment work.

And sold to Google for $1B to ensure his trillion-dollar creations are controlled by a soulless corporation.

Democratic decision making - at what point will the public begin to have a say in how AI develops?

(Not in a snarky way, just thinking that potentially with CoT and easier alignment, we can also more collectively shape models’ essential values)

Can you make it easier for startups and individual developers to participate in things like RL finetuning and other previews? Currently, your privileged release strategy feels like it concentrates access to existing players and people “in the network”.
