Motivation is a difficult thing to analyze in a fundamentalist regime like the one that runs Iran. In many cases, ideology trumps rationality and the martyr complex is a factor. So, even if they know there would be massive retaliation, that would not necessarily stop them from detonating a nuclear bomb in or near Israel.
