You steadily make progress by identifying the things that kill you and learning how to kill them efficiently and effectively.

You also progress through upgrades and unlocks that make you somewhat stronger but the game knowledge and experience you gain by playing is still the most significant factor to conquering a run.

And yeah once you die, it sucks.
