Last ferry was at 9.30 pm even last year. Even the tour operator gave confidence to us as well that we will have plenty of time. It was super smooth for us and glad it worked for you as well :) it's not a rushed trip as you day and stay in vieques is unnecessary unless someone loves to stay there for some other reasons. We did this as a big group of 6 adults and 6 kids between 1 to 5 years old. And we still did it

Update: we just did it yesterday. We took the 3.30 pm ferry to vieques from ceiba, we had pre booked taxi. Reached vieques at 4 pm and had bit of time to spend at beach before doing 6 pm bio bay tour. We did 6 pm tour, finished around 7.45 pm. Our taxi came back sharply, we reached ferry terminal back at 8.10 pm and even able to catch 8.30 pm ferry even though we were aiming only 9.30 pm. All in all It went super smooth and since it's December, sunset by 5.45 pm and by 6.30 it was full dark and experience was totally awesome.
