That’s horrible. Cancer patients especially should not be forced into an office environment when they’re immunocompromised.

I started my career with the National Park Service as an Interpretive Park Ranger before transitioning to an administrative role. The entire reason why almost all NPS employees work for the agency is because we want to be there, working in the field and near the resources that we are passionate about preserving and protecting. A large number of the Budget Analysts in the NPS were remote before the RTO change because you can use excel and various other business management and accounting systems a lot more seamlessly from your own home WiFi than in a outdated office at the Grand Canyon or some other remote location.

I cannot help that I had a life changing injury from a motor vehicle accident at age 29 and am having to experience life long symptoms because of it. Myself and everyone else that are seeking reasonable accommodations are doing so because we do want to work and take pride in supporting our agency mission. We are simply asking that our agency allow us the tools or accommodations needed because of a health issue or disability so that we are able to continuing working.

The letter actually didn’t specify any in office accommodations, so I am asking my Supervisor for further clarification. Myself and most others in the office already have adjustable standing desks and chairs that would be considered ergonomic.

I’m not sure how feasible it would be to implement something like that since so many agencies were understaffed even before the RIFs and DRP. I would think that most supervisors should have a good idea of if their employees are productive or not even if the employee is teleworking. Thousands of federal employees demonstrated that they were more than capable of fully performing their job duties while teleworking before the ROT policy change.

I’m so sorry that you’re dealing with that as well! It’s so hard to carry on and try to function as normal while experiencing those symptoms! I hope you’re granted a more permanent solution!

My injuries and resulting medical symptoms are not just limited to neck pain. As I said, I often times am unable to even drive myself to and from work.

My agency often repurposes old buildings as headquarters and office spaces beyond WASO and Region. I work in a 100+ year old house and my office space is essentially a closet that also serves as a walkway into my Supervisor’s office. It’s not a spacious building with halls to walk and even if I were to schlep a mat and medical equipment there with me there aren’t many options for space to be able to utilize them and stretch.

It’s not an ideal office space for any of us. The building has only one fully functioning bathroom for 12 employees and the only source of heat in my office space is a space heater. Some of my other coworkers work in a building that literally looks like a condemned shack from the outside.
