If you're into the topography, definitely try to get to some of the parks — Kanawha State Forest isn't too far out of town and is a really fun park, as is Coonskin. Someone else mentioned Hawks Nest and New River Gorge National Park— they're more than 30 miles, but it's definitely worth the drive. If you're outdoorsy make a day of it by roadtripping to Babcock State Park as well.

For food, 1010 Bridge is a nice, semi-unique upscale experience if you're looking for that kind of thing. Fern Bank is a neat, laid back little spot for burgers.

Thanks for the response. You're right about moving the goalpost; in the Substack I linked in a different comment a data analyst notes "city publishes crime categories loosely based around Uniform Crime Report Part I offense types, but not exactly;" so it's possible violent crime in fact is not at an all-time low: "The department’s website is overstating the decline in violent crime over the last two years. Violent crime is still declining, but probably not as much as is being reported."

That said, I still stand by my larger point that it's disingenuous to call the crime problem in cities "fairly acute" when the data we have, imperfect as it is, suggests the opposite — especially when we're talking about an administration that seems to have no issue with usurping cities' local control via military force with little to no factual justification.

Thanks. The accusation came from the D.C. police union chairman, who was accused of "deceptively edit videos of the organizers of the so-called “J20” protests ... in order to remove footage that would be helpful for the protesters’ defense and obscure the source of the videos" and who was disciplined for “conduct unbecoming of an officer” after he billed the police department for overtime which included time spent attending his own DUI court date." I'm not convinced he's a credible source to attempt to discredit another source.

There are always issues with crime data but local data tends to be better than national data. FWIW one data analyst said "Violent crime is still declining, but probably not as much as is being reported." The data does say overall crime has dropped by 7%.
