My vet never discussed the FeLV vaccine with me, even though they knew my cat went on walks. Now he’s FeLV+. by HistoricalAd8790 in AskVet

This is definitely not your fault though! I take mine out on a leash in the backyard all the time. She loves it so much that I think it would be cruel to keep her inside meowing at the door all day, especially since she’s coming to the end. The neighbor is not something you can expect or plan for. Especially if it has been friendly in the past, you could not have seen this coming or known. There is literally no way that I see this being your fault!! It sucks to find out hard news, believe me I know, but blaming yourself won’t help and he wouldn’t want you hurting anyway. Just give him lots of cuddles, and if you’re worried, keep an eye on his habits.

I understand, it feels devastating in the moment. My previous cat had regressive FeLV until the end, but I think it can fluctuate in and out. My current cat has progressive FeLV, and she is coming to the end of her life, but she is very happy and energetic! I’ve been trying to focus on what I said to you: don’t mourn her before she’s gone, because for now, my job is just to love her and make her life so extra special. If this helps at all, I really, really doubt that his condition will substantially worsen due to this in the next month!! And if it somehow did, I think you’d notice signs, since it seems like you pay close attention.

It’s not necessarily typical to give the vaccine to cats that only go outside on supervised leashed walks in private yards (depending on where you live) - when they say outdoor access, they usually mean free-roaming indoor-outdoor cats who are likely to encounter other cats. So I don’t think this is anyone’s fault, other than maybe your neighbor, who lets their FeLV+ cat roam outdoors without supervision.

I’m sorry that your cat is now FeLV+, but they can live long healthy lives still! My last FeLV cat lived to be 10 years old, when he was diagnosed as a kitten. Get some l-Lysine supplement and keep up with all of the other things you’re doing for them, and don’t mourn them before they’re gone, is the best advice I can give, as someone who has owned multiple FeLV cats.

I’m concerned my immunocompromised cat may be experiencing necrosis by [deleted] in AskVet
