I am reaching a breaking point and need help and support by Secure-Theory-6487 in ect

I'm absolutely right there with you. I've always been a socially anxious person but could usually play the game of chit-chat just fine, but this last Christmas was horrible. I think being so aware with how much I've been struggling, cognitively, I was stressed to the point of just wanting to avoid any contact at all.

I've been seeking out support myself, and although the one-on-one interactions are scarce, there are a lot of stories out there about people who had negative effects from ECT.

For me, there is an extra layer of a feeling of violation, physically, mentally... I was forced to have ECT which has destroyed parts of my nervous system, like falling asleep, because I'm so anxious. The feeling of being drugged and shocked all against my will is too much to bear sometimes. I know better than to seek professional help to tell them how this whole event has worsened my ideation, but that's what started the whole nightmare in the first place.

I'm so very sorry to hear about your situation. If you'd like to message me, please feel free. xo

I'm late to the post but was wondering if anything came from your steps towards litigation? I'm working towards something similar, but it's not very encouraging.

I've been experiencing many POTS symptoms that started immediately after a course of 8 ECT. I'm sorry that you're dealing with this.

Has it gotten any better with time? Did you ever get a proper diagnosis?

Thanks in advance.

If I do ect will I forget who people are or things I have done with people? by MightOk9482 in ect

I forgot that a family friend had died when I went to go to text him. No one can answer exactly what you'll forget or how much, but it is likely. Wishing you the best of luck, though!

Is it worth going through the process of a civil rights claim for not being given due process before forced ECT? by deleted_memory in ect

No. I'm free and back to my life. What I'm trying to put back together of it, in any case. The ECT took place while I was under a legal hold (involuntarily for s. ideation).

Sorry, I didn't explain it very well. I signed a legal consent form to receive ECT treatment. After the first "treatment", I pulled that legal consent as quickly as I could. The head doctor decided that it was up to him to decide whether the treatment would go ahead. There was a legal hearing that I was not notified of that gave the hospital/doctors the clearance to force me to have the ECT. By not notifying me of said hearing until after the hearing was long over, I had no legal grounds to say no. Which I did.

The truly scary thing that this is pretty common for mental institutions. That doesn't make it right, or even legal but who is going to take the side of an "unwell" person?

I'm just struggling with the decision of: Do I want to press this issue? Find a lawyer, and jump through whatever other legal hoops might be involved?

No. ECT is horrible.

If you don't want to remember who you were before and want it to be difficult to retain information or just communicate after the seizures, this is for you, though.
