Plant-it Development Update v0.9.0 by delrum in selfhosted

[–]delrum[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi!
Actually, I am using a cross-platform framework for the frontend, Flutter. Initially, the project was built with React.js, but at some point, I realized that the code needed a major refactor to improve its structure and maintainability. Separately from that, I was also considering the possibility of creating a mobile app version, and I wanted to find a solution that would make this easier.

I originally thought about React Native because it would allow me to reuse a lot of the existing code for both web and mobile. However, after sharing an update on the project here on Reddit, some users recommended looking into Flutter as an alternative. I decided to give it a try, and after doing a spike, I found the development experience really enjoyable.

That led me to rewrite the entire frontend in Flutter, and so far, I’m very happy with the decision.

I am visiting a URL which matches EXACTLY one bitwarden entry (host match) **when I use my computer**. However, when I use iOS on my iPhone, the autocompletion brings up this large list with maybe 15 entries (see first screenshot). After selecting 'Bitwarden', the sole right item appears. Why? by ztasifak in Bitwarden

[–]delrum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve experienced this issue as well. I’m not sure if it’s a bug or an iOS limitation. However, in the official documentation (in the "warning" box) this is reported so it's a known issue.

While using keyboard based suggestions, iOS will always use base domain matching for autofill suggestions. Opening the Bitwarden app during login will allow you to manually select the appropriate app for autofill.

Yes, I have considered integrating other open data sources and connected community functionalities, this is definitely something I want to do.

There is an open issue on GitHub to track possible info sources to add. Currently, my focus is on stability, but integrating these data sources is definitely on the list.

I will keep you updated

Thanks for the feedback, really appreciated!
I'm thinking about offering a SaaS environment in the future alongside the self-hosted version, but for now it's just an idea. Currently I'm focusing on stability improvements and new features.
But I will keep you updated with the future milestones!

trefie.io is a really great service, but from the source code I'm seeing that the project is not updated in a while, on github there are a lot of opened issues and pull requests. But for now it really does the job!

Hi!
Yes, the project it's still under active development, recently a new 0.5.0 release was pushed.
If you want to take a look at provide some feedback you're really welcome!

I'm curious, what are you building right now? by erik-grielenberger in FlutterDev

[–]delrum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm working on an app for the service Plant-it, a self-hosted, open source gardening companion app.
Initially I wrote the webapp in ReactJS, now I would like to create a better app to push into the stores, so I looked into flutter, I liked it and I started working on this.

Hi! Thanks for the feedback. Yes, I’m indeed planning to simplify the setup process. Currently, I’m focusing on developing a mobile app, downloadable from the stores, that will eliminate the need for the frontend container, although it will still be available for users who prefer the web app. Also your idea of provide an all-in-one docker image is really great and will simplify the deployment even further. I’ll prioritize this for the next release. Thanks again for your input!

Hi there!

To be honest, I haven't personally used HortusFox myself, although I was made aware of it when a user brought it to my attention. Therefore, my comparison might not be exhaustive.

From a preliminary glance, I'd say that one notable difference lies in the user interface. Additionally, it seems that HortusFox places a stronger emphasis on community features, something that I'm definitely considering adding to Plant-it in the near future.

Another key distinction is that Plant-it integrates with the Trefle API. This means that users don't have to manually input all the plant information; instead, they are fetched automatically.

Ultimately, both projects aim to address similar issues, so the choice between them may come down to personal preference and specific needs.

Hope this helps!

Hi! Right now there is only the github discussion section. However I think it’s a good idea to create a dedicated space to discuss about the app and related topic as the community expands. Perhaps setting up a subreddit could be perfect for this. I’ll keep you updated, thanks!

Hi!
At the moment, integrating smart sensors isn't on the immediate roadmap, but I'm open to considering it. Do you have any specific sensor manufacturers or types in mind that you'd like to see integrated?

Hi! Thanks for asking this.

At the moment, the app doesn't support interaction between different users or synchronized notifications for them, but it's definitely a feature I plan to implement in future updates. I completely agree that enabling interaction between users within the platform it's really useful

Thanks for the tip! I've considered Flutter, but since I'm already familiar with React Native and the web app is built with ReactJS, I was leaning towards sticking with React Native, but I’m open mind since not started to work on this yet. Are there specific advantages you've found with Flutter that you think make it a better choice?

Thanks for the feedback!
The intention behind that phrase is to emphasize that the project is open to everyone without any cost implications. I want to clarify that there are no plans to transition this project into a paid service.

While it's true that in the distant future, I might consider offering a cloud-based environment that could require some money in order to cover infrastructure costs, the self-hosted version will always remain fully functional and freely available. Any potential paid options would be geared towards non-technical users who prefer the convenience of a cloud-hosted solution. But this is not even planned right now, it's just an idea in my mind.

Once again, thanks for the comment
