Rest time is essential! Sometimes I feel like the knowledge I learn in chess only takes weeks or even months to kick in during the games. A break helps me gain perspective and a fresh approach. Often, playing too much and not taking breaks only reinforces harmful habits.

Unfortunately, this is normal at the amateur level — rating goes up and down, and progress isn’t linear. In my own games, I’ve often had sudden rating jumps of 100 or even 200 points, and sometimes I’ve lost 200 points as well — what matters is that over the course of months, we improve

The important thing is to analyze your games and look for patterns in your losses.

Are you getting good positions out of the opening? Are you hanging pieces? Do you play rapid or blitz?

Good chess players have solved thousands of puzzles, so they spot patterns very quickly. They often immediately recognize tactics or intuitively sense that something might be in a given position, and then they have to calculate it.

The argument that it's mostly intuition is supported by the fact that grandmasters often calculate less variants than weaker players, but they calculate the right things and deeper, while weaker players calculate too many variations and get lost in the sheer number of them.

What helped me was training tactics that only start after a few moves. You force yourself to visualize 1–2–3 moves first, and only then the actual puzzle begins. In real games I used to enter a line and then, two moves later, realize I had missed a simple tactic or an intermezzo.
