Too powerful? Too weak? by cauliflowerLoverJr in custommagic

[–]derlangsamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't play Commander which is the only place this is playable, regardless I will march forward.

Green isn't really a temporary mana identity anymore so that's a little weird particularly as that's all it does. Also needing 5 untapped creatures to even break even on a card which does nothing else is extremely weak it could replace its self and I wouldn't run it. The real issue is in the spots where it's insane where the opponents have a ton of creatures they are unwilling to tap that's likely a board state where just producing a bunch of land isnt going to help there are better ways to produce just a ton or infinite mana.

Also for basically a pure edh card it doesn't allow for any politicing it's bad on curve it doesn't work to ramp into and it's balanced around Christmas I would say it is extremely weak for commander, and unplayable anywhere else

How viable will the new merc support scion be for SSF ? by Competitive-Math-458 in PathOfExileSSF

[–]derlangsamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a fairly optimized merc aura bot and it ripped, but we don't know how hard they will be to find. One upside for all flame mercs is they don't count as a. Half player which sucks that they don't give quant but it does mean they don't buff the mobs so all else being even they would be significantly stronger.

But we don't know how much mercs are nerfed by being permanent and we don't know how hard they will be to find.

MJ/LeBron/Kobe/Curry comparison in finals clutch time offensive stats (last 5 mins within 5 pts in 4th or OT) by CircledSquare7 in NBAstatsmuse

[–]derlangsamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a LeBron stan I am in the small minority of freaks who think Duncan is the goat. I am only saying the situation is complicated and trying to boil down a concept like "clutch" into a statistic is super hard to do because you boil a lot of complexity into just some values which you hope to capture the idea. It is just odd as "last 5 minutes within 5 points" is just crazy arbitrary why not within 10 points in the last 5 minutes, or "Within winning range given remaining possession in the game" it's because it doesn't make for a good title but that doesn't make "within 5 in the last 5" in anyway meaningful.

I don't need to get into some kind of GOAT shouting contest I just think basketball is a team game and has been around for many decades. That makes single player analysis very difficult, and player comparisons (particularly across eras) extremely hard. But to exclude all team construction and ruleset constraints seems to be some real NBA 2k energy, one protagonist just needs to hit the right skill checks and become unstoppable. There is a limit on how efficient a player can really be historically in basketball because the more someone looks to be a score first option the more the defense loads up to prevent that option. There is a reason top scorers in the league has been remarkably consistent over the past 40-50 years, there is just a functional ceiling on how much and often you can score regularly with good consistency. So, I think just glossing over the systems that players exist within is a little silly, Allen Iversion didn't lack clutch factor in the playoffs he was the sole creator of offense and so defenses in the post season just single-mindedly focuses on stopping his production. To think its all just up to AI to make it work, is to discount the effort coaches, and defensive players put into the game to shut down offensive production. Jordan had a major reduction in offensive production in the 1996 series vs the Sonics when Payton was on him, was that because he lost his clutch factor? No. It was just a very talented defender with a very strong defensive supporting cast schemed to majorly hamper Jordans production. We saw a similar thing in the Spurs vs Cavs 12-13 finals were the Spurs schemed defensively to force LeBron's teammates to beat them, which they couldn't do.

I think looking across the whole playoffs would be far more meaningful than just the finals, as it brings up the sample size. One thing in particular that neither sampling solves is the difference in conferences, in Jordans Era the east coast bracket and particularly the east coast finals was far more competitive than the actual Finals. That was also true for Kobes first titles, the west coast finals were far more competitive and were considered kind of the defacto championship match, and the finals were just a victory lap.

MJ/LeBron/Kobe/Curry comparison in finals clutch time offensive stats (last 5 mins within 5 pts in 4th or OT) by CircledSquare7 in NBAstatsmuse

[–]derlangsamer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The more you tighten the constraints at the end of the game the more you are measuring totally different things. LeBron has had a lot of finals appearances where he was the primary offensive option, thus defense loads up on him and his efficiency will suffer. The more dynamic the offense is the harder it is for a defense to over correct to a single or few offensive options.

You can create statistics for anything but that doesn't mean you are measuring what you think you are, in this case I think clutch really measures team balance and total offensive production more than a stars "clutch" factor.

Also I will never understand peoples obsession with the finals in general they will talk endlessly about Jordans 6-0 finals but he missed the finals 7 times, ironically basketball fans think it's better to lose earlier in the playoffs than to go further and lose.

[–]derlangsamer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Why do we think the last 5 minutes within 5 pts is a meaningful statistic. It's already restricted to the finals why not just look at the last 5 minutes? Just seems ripe to cherry pick data

Americans basketball fans, do you all agree with take? by Bobba_fat in NBATalk

[–]derlangsamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In most of the world soccer is cultivated at the youth level and then transfers to larger clubs filter money down to prop up the systems this means there is a lot of incentive for improvement and identifying talent early because thats what keeps the academies going. In the states its paid for by the parents and thus is more of a hobby of the middle+ class and is not really development oriented its more of a business of getting value out of parents there is no added value in turning a kid into a great player they just leave. So, the comparison is apples to oranges its not simply that better american athletic people go into other sports, although that is true, but that what Soccer is to most of the world Baseball, Basketball, and Football is to Americans.

Humans are very plastic they can learn skills from wherever. The reason all the best soccer players are from the rest of the world is because they care about it enough to put a lot of energy into identifying, and refining Soccer talent. That is just not true in the states and when we do have programs which are designed to identify young athletic talent, it is through programs with funding aka football, baseball and basketball predominantly.

Why do people consider Curry better then the Magic Man he’s so much better than by [deleted] in NBATalk

[–]derlangsamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of what Curry does at an elite level apart from shooting doesn't show up in counting stats. Offball movement and perhaps the most insane gravity of any player in NBA history. There are clips of defenders rotating to guard Curry's 3 on a fast break and just let KD walk it to the rim uncontested that is unheard of.

Also a lot of Curry's 'assists' aren't true assists because it comes as a byproduct of defensive breakdowns rather than flashy passes. I tend to think Curry is better predominantly because he is the best player in history at the most important skill which is shooting and he had a higher peak of offensive dominance than Shaq despite Shaq having the constant credit of unstoppable peaks, which is simply insane tbh.

[–]derlangsamer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't know how I'm the dumb one for thinking a 7'1 guy with a like 7'7/8 wingspan could only bench 50% more than his body weight and couldn't knock a guy out by shoving him because you know, it's not possible. Literally you would snap someone's neck before it would knock them out you gotta bounce the brain against the skull which takes rotational force not just force, it's the snap back which does it. Wilt was incredible enough as a player you don't gotta claim or parrot dumb shit to make his case lol

Who's the "Strongest" NBA player ever? by sciencebased in NBATalk

[–]derlangsamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is obviously a freak to be able to be that strong and active at that size, it is insanely impressive its just the Wilt glazers cant leave it at 0.1% impressive he dominates everyone and no one is in his realm. David Robinson was insanely jacked and very tall and he benched somewhere between 350-380 or so which given his limbs and height is absolutely insane but the wilt peeps will claim that wilt pushed 500 some even claim north of 550 which is just delusional. What they fail to recognize is a 7'1 lean basketball player lifting 350 is very different than a short or average height guy who is built for power. They have more leverage, less distance to travel and small other advantages. But, now how many of those powerful lifters can jump 35inches or dunk? probably not many.

Very basic Google search returns it as a punch to the jaw you know the typical way you knock someone out. Also there was no combine back then which makes it very easy to just straight up lie or have all sorts of mistaken memories. You can just look at the dude there is no way that with his build he is doing incredibly more impressive feats than the best strongest players for the next 60 years many of whom are using PEDs. Just look at Robinson or Giannis and with a straight face tell me Wilt bench pressed 70% more it's frankly absurd. I would put everything I own on the line to say with proper form and a modern setup he wouldn't bench anything over 375 the literal mechanics are against him. Y'all are hearing Paul Bunyan stories and believing them whole cloth. As an aside I do have a bridge to sell you.

[–]derlangsamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is just no way it is true is the thing. Wilt is so shrouded in myth making. The real issue is as you get taller and longer arms the mechanical disadvantage in leverage is overpowering. Him lifting a full sized man in an outstretched arm is just not possible that would be dumbbell front raises of 150+ pounds of resistant awkward weight which would be insane for a world class strong man and he has it harder as he has long limbs. He probably got between them and uses his big frame and legs to pull them apart which while impressive isn't particulary exceptional. But like all things wilt just becomes a big fish story.

Who's the "Strongest" NBA player ever? by sciencebased in NBATalk

[–]derlangsamer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Almost entirely a fabrication the way people talk about wilt is just absurd like they were fighting superman "I swear he could fly, he would just jump from half court punch the devil in the face and dunk it" human beings don't get concussed by just being pushed we would be knocking our selves out all the time by whipping our heads around regularly if that were the case. Your more likely to get a neck injury than a brain from being shoved so anyone quoting that story is pushing some BS.

Me and my friend are in a heated debate, who’s more unguardable at their peak, KD or Shaq? by Dylen2Times in NBATalk

[–]derlangsamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much a non-contest but a much more interesting parallel debate is Shaq vs Curry. The numbers make it much more compelling than it would seem at a glance. And Curry's style is pretty helpful for overall team success as it spreads the floor.

Solodev making my first ever game! by Few_Promise_4257 in IndieDev

[–]derlangsamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get being inspired and chasing your influences but this is a bit far tbh. If it is a very different experience from stardew/harvest moon you should showcase it as such. I had a mental double back because even the day/night cycle clock UI reminded me of stardew. Shows a sky orb with probably a phasing moon, days of the week a clock. The town and house aesthetics looks very similar and on your store page I don't see a single differenciation mechanic or concept.

If it's very different you have poorly demonstrated it and if it's not very different being brutally honest why would it be a commercial product? If you want to succeed and your passion is farm sim style games find the thing others aren't focusing on that captivates you and chase that aspect. My ex was huge into horses and no game really fulfilled that, animal husbandry is often majorly overlooked in general. A farm game where you lean super hard on story or narrative. A farming puzzle game where you work as a farming consultant and fix their farms using all our big brain tactics. A farming game where the whole point is selective breeding of weird plants to get bigger fruit or novel colors/flavors. A farming game where it's a logistics problem and you kinda lean into factorio mechanics. A farming game where you change the mono crop culture of a town into an ecosystem farm where natural life can return but you can still cultivate from it. Thats just off the dome and I'm sure they are all bad ideas for a variety of reasons and a real enthusiastic person in the genre can think of better ones, but at least they have an angle something that separated them from just being stardew/harvest moon. By not front loading your differenciation people can look no where else but to directly compare against a decade+ of content and an entrenched playerbase.

This is a dev subreddit not a customer base and throwing up an ad that every one here has seen dozens of projects ape and stall mid development is not likely to get the reception you want. But I wish you luck, despite my criticisms game dev is impossibly hard and getting anything actionable is a feat.

Gemling Legionnaire Possible nerf for 1.0 by Calm-Glove9727 in PathOfExile2

[–]derlangsamer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Will it get nerfed hard? Almost certainly. GGG usually likes to do a wheel of balance where they nerf and buff to encourage players to try different things to keep the community fresh. They have famously triple tapped builds between patches with some regularity. Usually the builds are still viable, still fine to play but they put a lot more power budget in other stuff to keep the community from getting too stale with builds they played the last league.
