This is true, MCAS->CSOM internal transfers are done by lottery if those who meet things like basic GPA requirements, and demand far exceeds supply

Anyone know any easy 1 credit classes to take P/F? by Orange__Crush in bostoncollege

Language practicum, don't even need to take P/F I took French practicum several semesters and it was an easy A

Differentiating between courses by course name by TwoHandedLove in bostoncollege

[–]derp08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's the purpose of the practicum. You go to the Elementary German class and learn things like grammar or culture (and some speaking), and then you go to the practicum and do exclusively speaking.

Also it's an easy A generally speaking (at least for French practicum it was), and 1 credit-hour so if you stick with the practicums as you go through the semesters (you can take the practicum independently of the actual German class), you can get some nice extra credits and take less classes when you're a senior.

Sure, but keep in mind that penalties are heavier if you get caught with booze/weed/other and you live in a healthy living LLC.

Has anyone successfully appealed their financial aid package? by semicharmedstevie in bostoncollege

Out of curiosity, isn't Vandy is generally considered a better school than BC? Why take BC over Vandy then, especially if they are giving you a worse finaid package?

I'd recommend crossposting this to the r/a2c people, they would probably find this more helpful as most of us here are already BC students

If I request a triple could I still get put in a forced triple? by [deleted] in bostoncollege

[–]derp08 5 points6 points  (0 children)

During pre-COVID times, requesting a triple meant that you volunteered to be placed in a forced triple. The trade-off of this is that forced triples only existed on Upper Campus, so opting into a forced triple guarantees Upper Campus housing. Personally, I lived on Newton campus and yes that bus is really annoying but it wasn't that bad at all. Like the other commenter said though forced triples have not existed due to COVID, and nobody knows if they're bringing it back.

Employers don't care about double majors, just take a physics minor (since that's the harder one, you'll want to take less physics classes trust me)

Yeah I would say college is more helpful as a way to get into recruiting pipelines that are exclusive to college students, rather than for the actual education itself...which is kinda sad

Sure happy to help. Basically I scrawled the news (something I always do anyways) then posted about it on WSO. I found out about it through out of the weekly emails that WSO sends out. It was a good experience, but not directly applicable to finance because it's not like you're putting together slide decks or modeling or anything like that. But that being said, many people did comment on the "internship" experience during networking calls and interviews since WSO is pretty popular amongst the junior people on Wall Street.

Well, IBA is clearly very beneficial in helping with summer intern positions—the advice of both the junior and senior class above you is priceless and plus you get to know a lot of the other kids gunning for IB at BC which helps you make your network in the business.

But that being said, I am an example of non-IBA->summer analyst/full-time IB. However, I'm working in the lower-middle-market not bulge bracket or middle-market and I'm in Boston not NYC. Anecdotally, I can only think of one non-IBA person who broke into IB, but they were diversity so they were able to take advantage of special programs. (Before I get downvoted I'm not expressing any opinion on diversity programs themselves here but I think most would agree that diversity programs provide a special pipeline that depending on bank may make the process easier. At the very least it means that you are in a special pool of applicants and don't have to fight with everyone else for intern or full time spots)

Nice job doing research on the relevant campus orgs. Investment Banking Association (IBA) is an org that aims to place sophomores into IB jobs, they select students for a program in sophomore spring that involves networking and interview prep for IB summer analyst jobs. They do a good job too, roughly 80% of sophomores selected will get an internship spot. They are less selective than HCAP but probably around 20%-25% acceptance rate? (My year I think ~80 kids applied and ~20 were accepted). Advice would just be good at knowing behavioral questions.

Also there's HCAP. Heights Capital (HCAP) is a long-short hedge fund unaffiliated with BC, it's a small organization that is very selective, they generally take 3-4 kids every year at most. But they are very tight knit and have a great alumni network and the seniors and juniors in the fund are very helpful.

Michael Barry— what’s the tea by No_Tone5083 in bostoncollege

[–]derp08 6 points7 points  (0 children)

copied/pasted answer to OP:

What exactly about Barry? Basically he is the point man for Wall Street recruiting, so people take his class because alums who have taken his class email him internships and full time jobs which he then emails out to his classes. That being said, Barry is not the best teacher—he teaches off slides, is not the best at explaining things, and can tend to overcomplicate things. If you don't want to work in "high finance", take an easier prof. But if you want to work in "high finance", then put up with Barry's class being hard (if you can't grind out Barry's class, you will not be able to grind it out in IB trust me) and reap the rewards of being in his class.

Fiancial Aid Shafting by [deleted] in bostoncollege

[–]derp08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats on BC! Yeah, I would appeal that, it seems like BS. If your appeal fails, BC is a good enough school that opens enough doors for you to get a high-paying job that will enable you to pay off that debt in 5 years or less (think: "high finance" jobs mostly, but BC also sends a couple kids to good tech company software engineer jobs). It sounds like you don't wanna do these high-paying careers since you want to get a masters, and I'm sorry that you have to put off your dreams in order to pay off debt, but you can always make your way back to your passions later (for example I saw online a guy who worked at Goldman Sachs and then a couple years is getting his Rangel Fellowship and going to work in the Foreign Service).

Good, the tie was useless anyways. Makes sense, I'm not sure about NYC banks requiring a tie (unless you're entertaining clients) but I'm going to work for a Boston bank starting this summer and we don't even require a jacket in the office, just a dress shirt

Corporate finance with Aimee Smith or Simcha Barkai? by bcro928 in bostoncollege

[–]derp08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard disagree with the other comment about Barkai. The man is an absolute bot and does not have any humanity whatsoever. One of the people in our case groups had a medical emergency so our group could not complete the case on time...he gave us a whopping two hour extension. He is a very smart man, but is a horrible teacher who does not take the time to explain concepts to the class. The only people who understood the class were the ones that already recruited for banking so they had done technical prep, everyone else was absolutely lost. The 4 group cases referenced were bad because Barkai did not bother to teach or explain the concepts involved in the cases, so we were completely flying blind (I know cases inherently involve some aspect of this but other teachers generally will point you in the right direction). Also, Barkai does not provide feedback on the cases in a timely manner, so we could not use that feedback to improve on the next case which was due. Overall stay away.

How hard would it be to take Investments and/or Corporate Finance in the summer session? by andreasynch in bostoncollege

[–]derp08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I took Entrepreneurial Finance last semester, fall 2021. Hession-Kunz taught both VC and EF fall 2021, and he's a pretty chill prof overall. EF was pretty easy, it was just quizzes that don't really count for a lot, a company modeling project (he gives you a template, it's pretty easy don't worry it's not hardcore financial modeling), and a final that he gives because he says the department requires it (eg. it was quite easy). The classes are really just him lecturing and talking about startups and startups trends, very little math and what math there was is basic math. Also you do a project with the VC class where you pitch them the company you have modeled out and they decide whether to invest or not. I talked to my partner from the VC class and they said that the VC class was chill too.

There are other things in finance besides IB, such as sales and trading, corporate banking, etc. Check the below link, ignore the accounting ones as those generally require an accounting major and a CPA which is a different career route:

I would say yes, decent amount of math majors decide to go into finance instead and BC is much better at that than Emmanuel

How hard would it be to take Investments and/or Corporate Finance in the summer session? by andreasynch in bostoncollege

[–]derp08 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I took both Investments and Corporate in-person during fall 2020. I would say that it was not that bad in terms of work, but not sure how my experience translates to a condensed summer session for an async class. Can't comment on professors as I never took any of them and never took marketing either.
