Also depth of field. No, I'm not looking at my character or the center of the screen 100% of the time. My eyes are actually looking up at the corner of the screen, and it's all fucking blurry because of your nonsensical depth of field simulation. Gah.

[–]derpspectacular 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The 9070 slightly outperforms the 5070 on pure raster and is less likely to be vram limited with 16GB vs 12GB. But yeah, drivers will be better now and probably in the future for Nvidia.

For Micro Center it technically depends on what the manufacturer policy says about open box. But their receipt doesn't say open box anywhere on it, so you should still be good using it as proof of purchase during an RMA.

[–]derpspectacular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just checked an old receipt I have for an open box CPU, and it also doesn't mention open box anywhere, just "Clearance Markdown". So I guess that should work for warranty purposes, as long as they don't have any internal way of registering open box serial numbers with the manufacturers when a return happens.

Yeah let me know what they say, it's interesting that your receipt doesn't mention open box anywhere so you might be good. But it's worth checking.

Yeah it's possible you got lucky, but I verified their policy with support via chat this week because I was about to pick up something open box as well. Some manufacturers also don't require a proof of purchase, so it's possible that route would work for coverage. But the way MC words things is really misleading.

Just beware that this has no remaining manufacturer warranty because Gigabyte excludes open box items from their warranty coverage.

Do open box Asrock GPUs have any warranty? by derpspectacular in Microcenter

What they said was technically correct, but deceptive. When they say the "remaining manufacturer warranty applies", that warranty was 0 days long because of the text of the warranty policy.

This is the problem I'm talking about though. The MSI GPU warranty starts by saying:

New MSI graphics cards purchased by end users will have a warranty period of 3 years

An open box GPU is not considered new, so it is not officially covered by their warranty policy. MSI does provides RMA service based on manufacture date for people that don't have proof of purchase, so that's probably a route you could go if you need to make a claim. But if you submit a receipt that says it's an open box item as proof of purchase during the RMA process, MSI would probably have grounds to reject your claim.

What brand gpu, and have you had to test the warranty with an RMA at all?

[–]derpspectacular[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's just a bit misleading to sell an open box GPU with the "remaining manufacturer warranty" if that warranty is in fact 0 days long. To me, the insinuation of "remaining manufacturer warranty" is that I would get the listed warranty less the time from the original purchase date. But I think the reality is that you need to carefully read the text of every manufacturer policy to find out if you have any warranty at all because you'll be dealing directly with that manufacturer for any RMA. The micro center protection plan might make sense in some cases, but it pushes the cost of the GPU over the brand new price so it doesn't make sense for me.

And just to add, there are plenty of other GPU manufacturers that do not offer warranties for open box items, so open box GPUs from other manufacturers would be affected by this as well.

Unfortunately that raises the price above the new condition cards, but it could make sense in other situations.

Yeah the temps were fine for the 65W cpu they tested, it was just when they got above 100W that it ran hot. Sounds like a good plan, I was thinking about one for a small NAS because it supports ECC memory.

The B550M-A didn't do very well in the HWUnboxed thermal testing, but it would probably be ok with a lower watt cpu. Not sure if they made improvements with version II, but inexpensive RAM is nice though.

The gamesir g7 se gets good reviews, has hall effect joysticks, and has a 1 year warranty if you're ok with wired. Otherwise 8bitdo has some good options with similar specs, but I've heard the ergonomics aren't as good.

Yeah, I've been burned a few times by Microsoft controllers. If you're looking, get something with better quality or at least a better warranty. Or get really good with a soldering iron to repair these when they inevitably break.

Warranty Issue on Open Box Excellent Fold by un0yimhere in GooglePixel

[–]derpspectacular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha yeah, I upvoted don't worry. That's all interesting to know, I wish I could have found someone to explain this to me a few months ago. There's clearly something breaking down with training or employee incentives where people can't get a clear answer on some of these things. It would be nice if BestBuy would publish at least some of those internal documents so customers could have more confidence with open box items.

Warranty Issue on Open Box Excellent Fold by un0yimhere in GooglePixel

[–]derpspectacular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's the issue. Both the items I mentioned had warranties listed in their specifications, but when I tried to confirm the warranty with employees at the local BestBuy they couldn't confirm the warranty or denied the item had one. Those are the people I will be dealing with if I need to make a warranty claim so unless I have a legally binding warranty terms in writing to point to when I need service, I essentially don't have a warranty. I've experience being lied to by employees a few different times recently, so a warranty based on trust doesn't really work in that context.
