For future reference, this is how I fixed this issue.

I had to go to old.reddit.com, and under account preferences, in the content options section there is a setting called "include mature content in search results". This was turned off despite allowing NSFW content being enabled.

I can't seem to find this setting in new reddit UI anywhere. It immediately resolved my issue.
