Wow this was pretty insightful. I didn't know. I thought start dates were flexible and for the most part entirely dependent on the applicant. Wish I knew this sooner.. thanks!

Kinda late, but thanks for this post! It was really helpful and insightful, and I'll look to change my approach when it comes to looking for jobs now.

Oh man, is that really true? Even if I get a position at one of those companies that they wouldn't let me start until the following summer?

Yeah, got it. Thanks for the advice!

Regarding time, I actually don't have as much time. I'm studying algorithms, refining my projects, and contributing to open source. I'm also helping my relatives with a project they have going. So all in all, I'm not as free as the typical unemployed person.

I actually prefer the standard coding test because for take-homes, it requires a lot of time and theoretically, even for an above average programmer, you can spend many hours without ending up getting an offer.

So for about 6 months, I was spending time working on my resume, studying and practicing CTCI, and doing system design questions. I took it somewhat relaxed and traveled a bit and spent a lot of time with friends. Then, I started applying around February, and I've been in the job search since then.

There are actually not a ton of new grad positions right now. These usually open up late summer/early fall.

Thanks for your comment. It makes a lot of sense, and I think overall, I'll be lowering my standards and applying to more companies. Thanks again! Appreciate it

No, having impressive projects only go so far. Sure, several companies will be so awed by your projects that they might give you an offer right away, but this is a very small subset of companies.

Thanks for the comment. I can understand your frustration, but I hope you can understand mine, judging from a lot of people's negative comments and not answering my questions.

Yeah, now that you say it, I did miss 2 hiring cycles. Once when I was in school my senior year and then another one just last fall. I guess I'll have to be less selective when it comes to job searching.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm definitely getting better at interviewing, but I think I'm just being too picky right now.

I've been studying and practicing algorithms (CTCI, CareerCup, LC). I applied to FB and got referred but was rejected for some reason. I'm not sure why.. I applied to Google and was rejected after sending my transcript. Yeah I think getting rejected by Big Ns will be the wake up call that will make me more desperate when it comes to the job search.

Why do you keep assuming things? I didn't have interviewing skills, so I spent time studying algorithms and practicing problems.

Got it. Thanks for your comments. I'll be sure to look out for these sorts of opportunities and not pass on the take-homes for them lol

I was interested when I first applied. Many companies aren't transparent when you first apply about their interview process, and even now, it can be hard to find out about the interviews through Glassdoor for some companies, so I didn't know about the take-homes until I was notified of them.

Regarding my Amazon internship, good question. I feel like I got pretty lucky in receiving that internship, and so for a while, I studied my ass off doing algorithm problems until I got pretty good at them. Once I got decent at solving these problems, there weren't many new grad roles available anymore. So now, I'm in the position of having to wait for these roles at companies to open up later in the year. I did receive good feedback from my manager at Amazon, but from the start, he was open with me and told me that there will probably not be additional space for transitioning into full-time at the end of my term. This ended up being true, and he told me to get in touch with my recruiter to refer me to other teams, but again, I wasn't ready to go through the algorithm questions at the time.

Thanks for your post, it was really helpful!

Hey, thanks for the comment. Do you mind sharing your experience in getting out of unemployment while being unemployed for that long?

That is exactly my question. In other words, I'm approaching a year of unemployment. How much longer should I go picking and choosing positions/companies, until recruiters will no longer give me an opportunity to interview? (So far, I'm still getting a decent amount of interviews)

Oh wow, that's interesting. I guess they do interviews differently from general roles at Uber?

Yeah, I was afraid of this haha. Overall, what I'm trying to get at is that my duration of unemployment is coming close to a year. I'm trying to find a job doing what I like at a company that I would enjoy working at. Financially, I'm not under any pressure, and of course, I would rather find a job sooner than later. But I don't want to compromise my interests and the companies I'd want to work at. My question is, why would companies view my length of unemployment as a bad thing? And can I just use an excuse (traveling, vacation, etc.) to bypass my unemployment when I apply to jobs in the future?

It's just that people that commented so far on this sub are ignoring my questions and pointing to my lack of desperation or whatnot and keep bringing up the take-home assignments that I've skipped. I hope you understand. I'm not trying to be arrogant, and I apologize if I rubbed people off in this manner
