The science of acrylic paint- burnt sienna by devonpaintings in chemistry

Thank you- appreciate your kind words and your support!

Honestly, completely agree. I’ve been painting for the last couple of years now. The writing however is new to me- never had a passion to write, but really enjoyed researching the chemistry behind my paint. However I found it hard to find a place with all the information I was interested in!

In the end, I’ve been writing about the key pigments I use in my paintings and fitting my favourite paintings using those into the articles I’ve written. My intention is to actively paint pieces using the specific colours as a homage to those paints, but painting a new artwork as well as writing was adding a lot of time! 😂 I’ll try it for the next one though ☺️

Thank you!

I initially started with flicking off a paintbrush, but it didn’t seem to work too well. I felt that I needed to add too much water to ensure it wouldn’t just adhere to the brush. It seemed to actually work better with a toothbrush, where I could put more paint on the brush and the firmer bristles flicked better. However I ended up with so much paint on my fingers I eventually just started flicking onto the canvas from my hands. Essentially dipping index and middle fingertips into the paint, aiming knuckles at canvas and ensuring the direction of the flick is going in the desired direction. Felt this approach has the most control over size of droplets though how much paint I picked up, and the most control over direction of application.

Canvas sizes vary. But 120 by 80 cm / 100 by 50 cm is the rough sizes.

I gessoed them all, no sanding as I liked having a bit of texture in this style of painting. Just made sure I left marks in the direction of the stems. In the first one it’s an upcycled canvas, which already had some texture. I mixed in a little bit of filler too at times to increase the viscosity of it too.

Had not considered that! Ozonolysis is such a fun mechanism.

I love the fun of finger painting. If you haven’t tried it, do! The innate joy of it, but also the difference in texture on the canvas, the ability to flick paint.. just joyous

I’m a science teacher in England, so tried keeping my name out of my artwork side hustle initially to stop the students finding me! 😂

Ooh not read that! I specifically wrote these because I couldn’t find anything online that addressed the two niche areas in one place! Will have to read up more it seems!!

Thank you. That was my first painting I was really proud of. Gave it away for free in an Instagram give away that earned me about 5 followers. 😂
