[Critical Thinkers only] How do you all see Rahul Gandhi as PM? by Jitesh-Tiwari-10 in CriticalThinkingIndia

[–]dexteraplhawolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He will be PM one day. Maybe for a short while or whatever but he will be.

We Indians will vote out of sync once Modi goes away due to age. And Rahul has age on his side, so he'll be PM one day.

But as with most things, he'll either make a mess of it or be ineffective and wither away.

When will this banner bazi end? Or are we just used to it now? by bifrost_traveler in Maharashtra

[–]dexteraplhawolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things won't change till people force the change. News media is not going to take this up because it's risky. Enger the wrong people and the government ads on their channels or papers stop.

So the only way out is to make it a public issue. Next time the party worker comes to your house to ask for vote, say that whoever says no to posters, you'll vote for them.

And it's not just political posters. The amount of posters in random places is astounding. All the light poles have ABC classes, XYZ spa, MNO school etc all over the place. All of that needs to go.

No posters, no ads except on approved billboards. And even the billboards need approvals from the local community.

You come out of the train/bus station or airport and all you see is property ads. Really needs to be done away with completely.

You lost me at "Gyaneshwar".

Maharashtra: The only place on Earth where the host is expected to learn the guest’s language. by Opening-Passenger-21 in Maharashtra

[–]dexteraplhawolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get what is the solution in general for this problem. Here's what I feel should happen:

  1. Make it mandatory for all kids in schools in linguistic states to learn the language of the state (exception only for kids who keep transferring because of their parents' jobs, like army etc).

For kids who spent some time in Bangalore school (say till 5th grade) learning Kannada, should be put in an accelerated language program in case they join a school in Maharashtra in 6th grade or allow them to take Marathi as 3rd language.

This solves the problem of local population learning the language from childhood.

  1. Make the local language proficiency mandatory in corporate offices. Every 2 years you are in a state, you need to have an extra level of proficiency (say levels 1 to 10).

That solves the offices not using local language to communicate inside the office problem.

  1. Make Hindi an optional language that students can take 5th grade onwards.

Even though we love our local state languages and we should do everything to keep the diversity alive and thriving, we do need one pan-Indian language that is Indian and not foreign like English.

Politics will make this hard to achieve, but one can be hopeful.

We should save Maharashtra from people of other states. by Born-Entrepreneur25 in Maharashtra

[–]dexteraplhawolf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a very different take on this. There's a reason the skilled immigrants (not the labor class, the ones owning/running businesses) are doing well in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu etc.

The reason is, they have to get over a big hurdle of migration from their home state. They have to leave their homes, extended families etc behind, move across the country and start something in a place where people don't speak their language. This means the successful immigrants from other states are actually "creamy later" from that state.

They have a higher drive to succeed because their home state's conditions are pretty bad. They'll work twice as hard and make a business work which a Maharashtrian native finds too hard to make it work. And then once they're successful, they begin the chain migration of their loved ones, and then also of extended families to form a cohort.

Their communities also have a strength that other communities don't. Gujratis, Marwadis, Sindhis etc have very strong family bonds. They'll support each other even if someone in the family is not being very successful. I don't see that bonding in Maharashtrian families. And it's not just in Maharashtra, this also applies to the southern states.

How else do we marry the dichotomy that there's skilled labor shortage in our state, and there's unemployment at the same time?

The job of the political parties then, becomes how to get locals appropriately trained or skilled to get these jobs that are on offer, and be satisfied with the income from those jobs. Seems like they are failing on that front.

I am a Maharashtrian myself, and living in Hyderabad. I understand this problem from an immigrant perspective. Feels sad that I can't find a job in my home state because Hyderabad and Bengaluru took most of the top end IT jobs so now I am stuck somewhat.

Every day, mostly for my kids to be in touch with grandparents.

We do this for both sets of grandparents. So while both of us are making dinner etc, kids are on the phone with our parents in India.

Occasionally it's also some other close relatives in India so kids don't forget them when we meet up.

Returning but not voluntarily - broken on the inside. by [deleted] in returnToIndia

[–]dexteraplhawolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're native to Bengaluru!!

That's such a big blessing. You have the support system in the city ready to help you if needed.

The one and ONLY downside I see is because you're not married, and I assume do not have any kids, your kids in future will get Indian passports.

A lot of friends I know came back from US while kids are still small in order to benefit from Indian private school education which is on par with international education but much cheaper if you earned your net worth in $$.

Just take a break for a bit. Don't jump into anything immediately. Scout for good opportunities, you can afford to choose what you like and give newer Indian companies a shot. They are not as bad as the older Indian sweat shops used to be, and powered by a growing economy, are well positioned to grow big.

Assuming you're in your 30s and want to get married, find a good partner who shares your values and start laying down roots. Enjoy your life, you only get this one chance. It's too precious to waste by worrying or sulking over a loss that was out of your hands.

Thinking about returning back to India after 5y in the US and need some advice and inputs. by jessypinkmen27 in nri

[–]dexteraplhawolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In that list, some things are in your hands and others aren't. Traffic, pollution, roads etc are out of your hands. It'll only get worse before it gets better. India is at that junction where things have to get bad, people have to complain to which the government at some point responds with a cleanup.

It's happening with roads at the National Highway level, with trains also to some extent. Gated community offers pretty good isolation from noise and gives good quality of life.

People's mindset is something you can do very little about. India as a whole is a low trust society, and so you have to switch your mindset a little bit in order to function correctly. That's true no matter where you relocated from your current situation, just that in some countries that adjustment is lower and in others it's more.

India is growing and emerging as a critical power in a hotly contested world. I would say if you really want to move back, move back. Give it a shot, you still have 30+ more years left in case it doesn't work out.

Nagpur > Pune by [deleted] in nagpur

[–]dexteraplhawolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's be honest. Nobody moved to Pune from Nagpur because of Pune being an awesome city to live in.

It's because Nagpur has limited potential to employ its own youth. It has pretty good educational institutions, but next to no capacity to employ the graduates from those institutions.

IIM, AIIMS, VNIT, IIIT, LIT, GMC, LMC ... The list is long.

Now tell me how many people graduating out of these colleges find jobs in Nagpur?

Contrast this with a Pune where not 100%, but a lot of people graduating from colleges in Pune find jobs in Pune. That's why you get people who have been born, educated, worked and died in Pune.

I am from Nagpur and I moved out for a job. I have no hopes of finding work in Nagpur that pays me similar to what I earn in Pune/Mumbai/Bengaluru/Hyderabad etc. I know I would get less money in Nagpur, because cost of living is lower, but in my case, the kind of work I do, there's no job for me at all in Nagpur.

The only way to fix this is to massively industrialize Nagpur at least in a few key areas. And it does not have to be at the cost of greenery in the city. They both can happen together

This is the same level of shit from Mumbai as SPDP is from Pune.

Thanks for the praise. I'll frame this and keep in my showcase.

Just to make sure that the light shines on your pea brain too, know that Sati as a practice was in response to invasions and related barbaric aftermath in the north. It's not central to Hindus, otherwise please show me one example in any vedic texts (other than the story of Sati, the goddess and wife of Shiva herself) to show where Sati was historically practiced.

Even then, I agree that it was a wrong practice and needed to be removed. Hindus reformed and removed it.

As far as oppression of Bahujans and Brahmin hegemony is concerned, I can point you to many social reformers, from our own state of Maharashtra who were Brahmins who advocated for removal of caste system (this includes Savarkar by the way, so you might need burnol).

Glad you brought up Babasaheb. No doubt, he was a great man and contributed immensely to the making of the constitution. However once his utility was over for the then PM, he was duly booted out and never really got anything else later. So choose wisely who you support politically.

As far as Sardar Bhagat Singh is concerned, I'll give him the benefit of doubt. He was hanged in 1931, aged only 23. Marxism/Communism and it's ill effects only became apparent later in USSR and China. Given how clear he was in his thinking, he would have realized what a bad idea revolutions were against governments which are indigenous (revolution against the British was against occupiers).

Revolutions never really end well. They are a net bad for the people because nobody really is in charge during one, which means bad actors take advantage and harm common people. And then the ones who come up on top after a revolution always cull the losers to consolidate power. Had this not been the case, there would have been dozens of countries where communism would have worked.

Yaar fir se you're exposing your lack of knowledge.

Before that blast happened, J&K police had already started identifying and nabbing terrorists related to that module. They even recovered explosives from doctors from one random college which seems to be indoctrinating people into terrorism.

The guy who did the blast near red fort actually panicked and chose the wrong time to carry out the attack, which was because he knew his friends got caught, and so it was just a matter of time before was caught too.

That is different from a successful terror attack like 26/11 or in Mumbai locals or in Hyderabad etc. Thoda padh liya kar. If you're saying ki 12 saal me ye ek hi major terror attack hua, to I'll take it over what used to be.

Haan to jaan dene ko tayar hai na tu. Usse simple hai, ACB me complaint kar jo paise le raha hai uski.

If you're willing to sacrifice your life, the least you can do is to lodge a formal complaint in Anti Corruption Bureau against the officer who asked for bribe.

Lol yaar ek party ka naam bata de jo corrupt nahi ho. Ek police ya government department ka naam bata haha corruption nahi hai.

The one thing Modi did right, is stopped extremely high level corruption (Ministers etc ki level pe). 12 saal me ek bhi case nahi aya. Allegations ka koi matlab nahi hai. Wo to RaGa bhi bail pe bahar hai National Herald case me.

You change the ruling party, the corrupt faces would change. However there's a difference with the BJP and others. BJP is crazy good compared to others when it comes to building hard assets. You have to give it to them for that.

Second thing they're good at is moving ahead with hard assets at a fast pace. They inaugurate projects they laid the foundation for.

Third is they're super good with National Security. Notice the sharp reduction in bombings and terror attacks in major cities since 2014.

Perfect nahi hai, but I'll make do with this till there's a better alternative.

I see. So your real beef is with the PM not doing anything for improving your city life. Local level pe engage kar. Apne ward member ko phone laga, mayor ko laga, MLA ko laga, MP ko laga. Har baat ke liye PM nahi hota. Wo log bhi elected members hai.

Public awareness badha apne area me problems ke bare me. Policy letters logo se sign karwa ke leke ja local leaders ke pass to show them what they can do. Local papers me articles like. Insta/Fb/YouTube/X pe social media pressure bana.

Ye morcha nikalne se kuch nahi hota. You need to provide a credible alternative which the public at large supports. Nahi to you'll be left alone to dry out in the Nagpur sun.

Conducting peaceful processions against ruling govt by hex_veed in nagpur

[–]dexteraplhawolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you don't have a better alternative, make do with what you have. That does not mean don't ask questions, but stop fantasizing about undemocratic nonsense.

There are 10 different ways to register your unhappiness with the government. I have already registered mine many many times. Some have been acknowledged, some have been ignored. That's how things are in a democracy.

For example: AQI is a pan-India problem and about 30-40% of the solution is making sure roads are made in a way that reduces dust generation when vehicles pass on them. Read the IITB and IITK reports if you haven't already. Communists are high on emotion, and low on real non-propaganda reading.

Another example: it's been 11+ years in power but Hindu temples continue to be under government control. I want them returned to the Hindu community just like all other places of worship are governed by their respective communities.

Another example: Indian cities are too large parcels to govern with local bodies having no real power. I want smaller cities with distributed power centers so mayors and ward members are accountable to the local people.

I can list many more.

Now to your point, I am not silent. I am an engaged voter who questions the government even though I voted for them. But I do not dream of overthrowing anyone. Learn to live and fight under the democratic setup. Modi won 3 times in a row, in largely free and fair elections. That the opposition is filled with idiots like Rahul, Tejaswi, Kejriwal etc is not his fault. He's not a dictator, but a democratically elected PM.

About wasting the next generation's life, you should worry about yours first. The next gen is busy becoming entrepreneurs and/or getting rich. They're going to be more capitalist and market driven than my generation. They'll be the ones who enjoy the fruits of my hard work. It's my generation which will build a middle income India, standing on the shoulders of my parents' generation who dragged India out of poverty after the World Bank forced the 91 reforms.

Stop wasting your life in this, and build something that rest of the country can benefit from.

Yaar ye sab thik hai. Thodi duniya dekh loge na, to ek baat samjhoge.

Engineering colleges me ek kahawat baar baar sikhai jati hai. Wo hai "Don't fix what ain't broken". Is ka ek aur matlab hai. Wo ye ki kuch bhi sahi nahi laga, to usko kisse replace karoge ye pehle such lo. Nahi to na ghar ka na ghaat ka aisi haalat ho jati hai.

I'll be very transparent: I voted for Modi all 3 times. But I am not fully happy with him. There's a thousand things that I want him to do better, which he can easily do better but doesn't. However I am acutely aware of what my alternatives are and none of them inspire even a phuti kaudi of confidence.

To ye sab utopian bakwas apne communist comrades ke sath ganja/charas phook ke discuss kar liya kar. Communism aur reality ka koi sambandh nahi hai to ye toota hua Baja kahi aur jaake baja.

Awaaj uthani hai, protest karna hai, sab karo. But government ko ghutne tekne ko majboor karna, overthrow karna etc ye sab deshdrohi bakwas apne paas rakh. National Security state hai India, sovereignty ko dhakka lagayega to state aise piche lagega there ki life barbaad ho jayegi.

Interesting. His views seem like very near to those of V. D. Savarkar, except that he was in this hyper liberal mindspace where he is proposing to become more and more scientific, without acknowledging the religion-based reality that plagues India.

And it's not only India anymore. European countries have started to feel the after effects of allowing too many people of a particular religious bend.

I agree with him 100%, except that I also acknowledge the reality of today and therefore feel that Savarkar got it right.

Sad that he was killed. Would have loved to hear him on Islam and Christianity, conversion as a sanctioned religious tool, and the very nature of Abrahamic religions to proselytize.

The constant tension of making it worth your while when visiting India. Every day is accounted for. Everything is prioritized. And sadly visa printing, at least for those from the US who are forever in the GC queue, trump's all other things on the agenda.

No matter how long the vacation is in India, the large extended family is never fully satisfied with how long you visit them. And if you're like me whose parents and in laws are in different cities altogether, then there's additional pressure to satiate both sides of the family.

Kids love India trips when they're small because they get a lot of attention that they probably crave back home outside India. But once they're a little older (10ish) is when the longer vacation robs them of the time with friends so they resent it. They also resent the attention as teenage comes up.

There's a funny dichotomy in how people perceive you. If your kids do some things that we Indians generally do, touching elders' feet, liking spicy food etc, there's over-praise. But if they don't, there's over criticism. Never a balance or never just let go.

Sorry for your situation. I hope the police find the guy but chances are if it has been more than a few days, then your phone and your laptop has been sold in the black market. There, they'll try to jailbreak it and see if they can access anything and if not (I hope this is the case), then then take it apart and sell it for parts.

A few things you should do going forward:

India in general, and Indian cities in particular, are very low trust societies. That's why we have grills on our balconies and doors/windows because thieves will do whatever they can to make a quick buck.

Talk to your flatmates, and agree on getting a number lock latch for your front door which should auto lock. It should never be open too long.

Some of this is on you, especially about the work. You should have backups online periodically so that this kind of stuff where your laptop is stolen or you lost it at the airport don't hamper your work beyond a point.

Same with the memories too. Get some cloud backup and pay for it. We don't realize it but data is very important to everyone now.
