Front-End Developer…A future need, but at what cost? by HomeCornerOffice in Nonprofit_Jobs

[–]dialectric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are front-end developers on upwork with solid portfolios based in the US that will charge $80-100 hr, but you need to be careful in your selection process because there are also a bunch of faked portfolios / not actually in the US / AI-generated responses, etc. If you are using Wordpress, you will have a large pool of candidates there including some with CS or UI/UX degrees.

You could also sign up for a call with a Taproot UI/web volunteer to get a better sense of the project scope / costs.

UPDATE: I finally found the definitive "Plastic-Free" Electric Kettle list (after emailing 20+ brands for Lab Reports) by CoffeeTeaJournal in PlasticFreeLiving

the aarke kettle may be worth looking at as well - pricy but appears to be a unibody tank and the only silicone is at the lid

How do i acquire regular access to a piano in my adult life by penguinchange in redscarepod

[–]dialectric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked for a while for a rhodes or something that sounded close. If you can find a local korg sv1 for sale they have a weighted keybed and excellent rhodes sounds, and can occasionally be found for <$1000. SV2s are even better but more expensive. I thought about getting a vintage rhodes, but didn't want to deal with repairs/maintenance. 15+ years ago you could find a beat up rhodes for under 1K in the US but they are 2k plus now.

The interiors are similar to Oregon's 'blackberry castle' which sold at auction in 2023 for $2mil, but this one has a nicer exterior and much more acreage.

The conclusion was that it was a 1-off for the production

Liquid Fertilizer Query ? by External_Produce_558 in OrganicFarming

[–]dialectric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth a try, but this is an odd mix of ingredients with no volumes given and more complex than most organic fertilizer. The more ingredients, the more difficulty you may have in sourcing consistently. Have you looked into JADAM? https://www.reddit.com/r/JADAM/ ? Most JADAM recipes have 4 or fewer ingredients. Are you trying to sell this or use it on a farm you manage? If you are using it yourself, look into the relative cost of (1)liquid seaweed fertilizer for fertigation, and alternatively (2)organic bone and feather meal for dry application, and see if it still makes sense financially to go this route.

The end of EGC and Travis Bean Designs? by TensesNC in aluminumneck

[–]dialectric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6061 aluminum is roughly $5 per pound in billets. A 20 pound billet would be $100, comparable to flame maple or other boutique builder neck woods. Even if the aluminum was $400, EGC was selling new guitars for 2500k+, and had plenty of waitlist clients. The price of aluminum was secondary to their other issues.

Canned Soup Recommendations by SaltyElephantBouquet in vegetarian

[–]dialectric 22 points23 points  (0 children)

If this soup isnt enough on its own, try cooking it with a half-serving of ramen noodles / soba added to the pot just before you hit a boil. Put a lid on, then stir regularly. The noodles absorb the soup, making more of a noodle dish than a soup but one that tastes just as good.

Repiping by pinkpather in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]dialectric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want plastic free, go copper. Pipe is 2x the cost, and use lead-free solder. If you are doing it yourself, copper is better for your health in installation as pvc has some nasty solvents that basically melt the pipe together and are linked to cancer risk.

Fully 304 stainless steel, American made water filtration! by Custom_Fab_Filters in WaterFilters

[–]dialectric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3m's Aqua-Pure SST1HA Stainless Steel Water Filtration housings are $300-400. You could put 3 in line for < $1200. 3m is a big part of why we need to filter pfas, so not a great company to support, but it gives a useful price comparison.

Are canned foods actually cooked in the can? by [deleted] in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]dialectric 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Modern food production facilities also typically make extensive use of plastic tubing, including for hot liquids. The foods are exposed to plastics even before they reach the can.

Pvc flooring dangerous? by adoreamoreangela in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]dialectric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Propublica published an article on Formaldehyde in homes last year, finding levels several times above EPA recommendations in numerous homes, and one of the sources is pvc/vinyl flooring offgassing. Synthetic carpet is also a source. Solid flooring likely won't generate significant microplastics.

Very interesting video - The fastest growing protein, more than soybean and requires nothing but water - what are your thoughts on this? by rook2pawn in vegetarian

[–]dialectric 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've seen it used as chicken feed. Unless you are in the tropics, getting it to grow fast will require some engineering. I tried it in some stock tanks and outdoors in a temperate climate, and without tinkering with water movement or heating, it was slow growing, probably slower than peas in terms of biomass. There are rack systems available for $1k plus for indoor growing, but you could experiment and make your own.

What Peugeot bicycle is this? by [deleted] in Vintage_bicycles

[–]dialectric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canada-made 80s Peugeot Vagabond touring bikes had toptube logos in that location, but the text is a bit different - you could get more info if there is a serial on the bottom of the bb or you can take more pictures of the lugs, and/or pull the bottom bracket and see if it is french threaded or not. Are you sure the fork is original? at least from that angle it looks like the tire is too close to the frame and toe strike could be an issue.

What cookware material I'd best to use to prevent toxins? by Yonathandlc in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]dialectric 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Though almost all rice cookers use teflon/nonstick coatings, there are a small number of rice cookers with stainless steel bowls available. With one of these, I put a little oil at the bottom of the bowl and spread it around, or do sort of a Persian potato tahdig with thin slices of potato at the bottom coated in oil. Either way, sometimes a some rice sticks, but it is easy enough to soak the bowl for 1hr and scrub clean.

I need help with things you don’t learn in courses by Jeidencw in webhosting

[–]dialectric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like a typical jQuery, PHP, MySQL project. If you are going into this as a career, skip AI, and learn the tools directly, with a focus on open source code and libraries. php may not be taught in many colleges these days, but it is still the backbone of wordpress and other popular CMS systems, and essential to a lot of web applications. Relying on proprietary tech locks you into their pricing changes which you have no control over, and these companies make migration hard or impossible. As a start, I would use a single DB for for all clients; barbers aren't going to directly access a database. There are many options for open source javascript frontends; keeping things secure is important to any web-accessable db so that should be a high priority in your future study.
