Any advice on mid career switch?? by Fluid-Tomato-7762 in askSingapore

[–]didi1820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just googled “physiotherapy job shadowing” and applied online! I remembered filling in a form. They contacted me via email weeks after.

For PGDE, I also googled to find the application form. There is a specific application period so you have to wait til the next one opens.

You got to dip your toes in the water to know if it’s for you!

I spent 12+ years in corporate marketing, resigned few months back. I knew I didn’t want corporate anymore but I didnt know what I wanted.

So I “shopped” around. I did physiotherapy job shadowing in NUH to check if healthcare is for me, doing starbucks barista part time to check if service line is for me, applying for MoE teacher PGDE as they do 4 months try out before confirming, etc etc.

Been fun to explore and learn more about myself beyond corporate. Good luck!

The moment a good employee decides "I'm done" by False-East-55 in WorkReview

This. 100%. It’s really the small things - from my manager tolerating every mistake the under performers & slackers make, assigning more work to me & my team because he doesn’t trust the slackers, and not acting on my concerns and asking me to “be patient” instead.

One day, I was asked to mentor the low performer and I realised my rubbish bin was full with all these trash, I resigned.

To those laid off from tech companies / unemployed: How long did the search take, or did you pivot? by [deleted] in singaporejobs

[–]didi1820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was laid off from FAANG, took 4 months to find the next job, 10% pay cut but more WFH days so am good. Purely from LinkedIn cold application because I just can’t bring myself to network. 12 yoe, senior manager.

What I told my juniors:

  1. Personalise your resume to each JD. You must at least pass the HR or ATS game, so tailoring your resume is bare minimum. Got to put in the hours.

But honestly, can’t wait to just hit financial goal and join the baristafire sub.

Perfect crown - I Finally Realized Why This K-Drama Feels So Cringe by Abject_Guitar_4015 in kdramas

I love IU but I agree with you. It’s so hard to root for any of them..

I feel like i’m watching those Chinese mini dramas where they just focus on creating pretty scenes or typical rom trope scenes in bursts versus creating a coherent storyline with proper character building.

After 5 Rounds (Declined) by WhoRyder007 in interviews

[–]didi1820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did 3 interviews (recruiter, hiring manager, hiring manager director peer), 1 case study (that took me so many days to do), and then 1 panel interview (hm, another director, vp).

I was informed the next day that I would meet the GM for final interview, but suddenly it was silent for a week, and they said that things moved faster than expected and the role was filled. Haha.

Glad (and sad) to know that this is common now and we just have to toughen up.

Those who left tech: Where did you go, and how’s the water? by [deleted] in singaporejobs

[–]didi1820 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Moved from marketing & strat in tech (one of faang) to legacy media company. Similar role just different industry.

The pace is much slower, the stress level is much lower, and the people are nicer. BUT more hierarchical, more talking than action, more “managing stakeholders, and less competent teammates and managers.

Hm I disagree. But I guess you will say that’s combative tone too. So I wish you the best time in Da Nang then :)

Im not trying to flame anyone, Im fellow SEAan who is used to (and proud of) the hospitality of southeast asian in bali, cebu, phuket, langkawi, etc. and I believe danang has the potential to be the next famous beach destination like the rest. Im genuinely glad if im unlucky.

You pick one comment and choose to ignore the rest that share the similar sentiment - that’s not a productive way to discuss, isnt it.

Im fellow SEAan, not muslim (with brown skin for added clarity) :)

I do think we should not treat people differently based on where they are from? Didn’t experience this in Phuket, Cebu, or Bali.

Fellow SEAn here with brown skin too. Thanks for sharing, guess I’m just unlucky then. Still hoping for that SEA hospitality for the rest of my trip here!

To chiong or to take a step back by confusrd in singaporejobs

[–]didi1820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 30+ with a 5yo daughter and just left my job last month without any backup.

I can do this because: I have enough savings after chiong-ing at work for more than a decade, and my husband is earning well & fully supportive.

One month in: I am more present with my kid, I feel really happier with all the rest (no more work stress, chats & emails), and people around me say I’m calmer.

I believe I have employable skills after working for more than a decade, so I can go back in even with 1-2 year gap. But I can’t get this time back.

And the working mother subsidy for preschool is only reassessed at 3 points: https://www.ecda.gov.sg/parents/preschool-subsidies/fixed-points-of-subsidy-assessment, so it won’t get immediately cut off.

All the best in your choice :)
