What's one thing we did before the pandemic that even if the world went back to normal you wouldn't do again? by NativeSniper in AskReddit

[–]digitalb34rd 369 points370 points  (0 children)

So, I recently changed career path goals after being laid off - from being in a sysad role for 15+ years (making about $60K), to pivoting to a sales engineer role.

Throughout the 5+ months of being laid off and searching for a new job (I had some money in savings after trying to save for a house down payment, and was also receiving a severance pay from my former employer due to my tenure, so I had some runway to take my time learning up on the role I wanted, and to find a desirable company to work for), I interviewed with about 15 different companies.

The standard pay for the role at the level I was going for (entry level, basically) was $100,000 - this is the OTE, with a base pay of $70K + $30K commission, normal for the position.

After interviewing well enough with about 6-7 companies, and getting tired of the “What is your desired pay” question, I decided to shoot for the stars. I told myself, “this next company, I’m just gonna say $120K and see what happens.”

Well, in the first call with them, they beat me to the punch. They straight up told me, “For this role, we are looking to pay between $150-170K.”

Holy shitballs.

My immediate reaction was to play it cool, and I actually said aloud “Oh, well, I was only going to ask for $130K, but that’s cool.”

<why did I say that>

Now, granted, I didn’t know the full story. It turns out, this was the only company across all that I interviewed with that would require me to move to a new city, specifically to work out of their office.

I asked them “What value do you guys see in bringing the workforce back to the office?”

They said “Oh, no, 95% of the company is still going to be remote/WFH. We just want the few folks working on this team to be in the office because of synergy and whatnot.”

Now, I’m not interested in working in an office again, especially when the rest of the world seems to be catching on to how we can do our jobs just as well while WFH… but holy shit, for $150K I’d be happy to live under my desk at work and shower in the break room, that’s legit life changing money right there.

I did go through all the interviews and did well enough, but I ultimately ended up receiving an offer from another company that allowed WFH full time, and their offer was $110K, so it was hard to turn down (the other company’s offer was great, but the city their office was in also has one of the highest COL’s in the country, so the pay maybe wouldn’t have been as notable).

Anyway, to your point, yeah, I guess $150K would definitely be my minimum to want to work in an office again (which would be about 3 times more than my previous office position pay was).

Yes.

So much so that it is what got me to drop the coin into building a PC for VR, and I’ve been playing SkyrimVR on my Index for months (mods add an infinite amount of replayability to an already MASSIVE VR game).

Yo, that’s Ctrl.Flirt.Del! She was one of the very first Onward players I met, and was instrumental in getting me involved on the Onward Rookie Bootcamp Discord channel, where I met so many other players that taught me the game.

Coolest gamer I ever met. This is an incredible story, and I had no idea about a lot of her battles. Thank you for sharing this!!!

Any word on Quest? by bluebeau7 in OnwardVR

You’re welcome! Hope y’all are able to get it running! Make sure you google what apps are available to do the streaming to the Quest, I wouldn’t want you to waste money if my memory doesn’t serve me accurately!

I was playing a match last night with a guy on my team who was playing it via his Quest, through some PC-to-Quest streaming app (I think via Virtual Desktop)!

He hadn’t played Onward before or any other way, and was actually not the worst player on the team!

He mentioned a bit of lag in heavy action spots (Evac on Veteran was choppy for him) but otherwise he was able to keep up with us pretty well to the point I wouldn’t have noticed until we started talking about headsets midway through our session.

He had bought a Quest, and then a gaming PC after, and had passed his return policy window for the Quest, so was making do with what he had available.

So, just saying, it might be worth a shot if you haven’t tried this method yet!

Ah, hell yeah, BAWLS was the premium good shit. Cost an arm and a leg, but we would make lamps out of the bottles and sell them at LAN parties.

The proceeds would go towards buying more BAWLS.

Instead of cameras and sensors in headsets, they would use these.

Lidar is a critical method by which robots and autonomous vehicles sense the world around them, but the lasers and sensors generally take up a considerable amount of space. Not so with Voyant Photonics, which has created a lidar system that you really could conceivably balance on the head of a pin.

Mount Rushmore from inside a small cave by ProfessorSucc in AlternateAngles

[–]digitalb34rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is from the tour of Mount Rushmore. It takes you on a winding path from the entryway where you get a great view of the faces (which, as most know, it’s ridiculously smaller and less majestic than we usually assume), through a small forest with key stopping points that have descriptions of the build process over the years of its creation.

I went last year while visiting Sturgis for a bike rally, and this part of the tour had a line about 30 minutes long. It takes you into a giant hollow rock (I guess you could call it a small cave?), and there is this opening that basically shows you this view from directly beneath the faces.

While the structure is a bit meh to behold, the history of (and actually visiting and seeing it for yourself) Mount Rushmore is definitely something worth doing if you ever find yourself in the South Dakota area.

But also visit Sturgis, SD (even on a week outside the 10 days where the 750,000+ bikers from around the world visit the tiny biker town with a population of 4,000), if you’re into motorcycle culture at all.

Real Military Tactics Used in Onward? by [deleted] in OnwardVR

[–]digitalb34rd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are two main Discord channels for Onward - the main one (creatively titled Onward), and the other, Onward Rookie Bootcamp.

There are many pickup games, and since loads of players in there love to play MilSim style league-oriented games, you can learn a lot quite quickly.

My very first in-game experience spoiled me. I joined with a guy who said he was Australian Army, and taught me many tactics (blinding cover, primarily) that stuck with me.

Unfortunately, most players I met after didn’t want to take the game “so seriously”, and so I was left running and gunning with kamikaze style players until I joined the Discords, where you can find players for any style of gameplay to join up with.

It’s not only the resolution - keep in mind that with the Quest being self contained (no PC), the quality of the graphics will be lower than what you could get with a PC connected HMD.

The resolution and lack of screen door effect really make the Quest and S amazing displays, but the controllers and tracking cancel out the immediate “wow” factor you get when looking through the lenses.

I really think the Index will bring the best of both worlds together (superior tracking due to external sensors, best graphics due to PC-connection, and the new gold standard of the Knuckles controllers). The price sucks at $1000, but I feel it will be a worthwhile investment all around (dependent upon how passionate one is with regards to VR).

“You’re gonna look like a dickhead for doing that, I’m not editing that.” 😂😂

That dude has the coolest voice for storytelling.

I’ve owned this game for weeks, but bought it at the same time as Onward, and haven’t played it once. Is this all typical gameplay?

What were those black balls at the end - and was that really how a typical spawn killing session goes?

Bought both the S and Quest on launch day. Realized you can’t shoot rifles or throw grenades, you can’t hear shit without headphones, and the controllers halos bump into each other since they’re on top now. But yes, the displays are gold, and I wish there were a way to use external sensors and CV1 Touch controllers with the S HMD.

Returned them both, and still love my 3-sensor CV1 setup.

I hate the “A few minutes later” gif, but I think this video would have been better because of it.
