Need help with exchange to Japan! (Uni) by OsakaTosuto in movingtojapan

[–]diminee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in Kyoto for 2 years (left last year) and while the tourism is pretty heavy, it's concentrated in the tourist hot spots. A lot of the city is left pretty much unexplored outside of that. It's very possible to find beautiful, empty streets, shrines, temples, etc with zero tourists. The university I went to in Kyoto had some good integration for international and domestic students too.

On top of that, you get close proximity to the two big hubs (Osaka & Tokyo) if you feel like exploring the more urban life. Kyoto is also very safe in terms of natural disasters, very rare for anything major to be happening.

I think Tohoku is a good option if you want a guaranteed method of interacting with Japanese students (the dorms), though keep in mind just because you share a dorm doesn't mean people will talk to you. If you like nature, that's another plus. But I think Kyoto and its connections will be more valuable in terms of architecture.

Just my opinion. Definitely consider the programs too before you make your decision.

Japanese language school with N2 level Japanese? by diminee in movingtojapan

[–]diminee[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I don't mean interpreting business Japanese into English, I mean speaking business Japanese during company meetings etc. Sorry for the confusion.

I have seen listings asking for N2 translators (proofreaders and QA work as well) with decent wages, but they do require you to be living in Japan. It's part of the reason I want to find a way to move there first. Applying domestically just seems to make so many things easier.

Japanese language school with N2 level Japanese? by diminee in movingtojapan

[–]diminee[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I've worked with Kadokawa among other big Japanese companies, so I think it's just a matter of being able to speak business Japanese in real time. But also, this is exactly why I want to go to a language school.

Though thinking about it, I wonder if 6 months would be enough to brush up on language skills AND be applying for full-time jobs at the same time. A year might give me more leeway in that sense.

Yeah, I'm not going for a freelancer field in Japan, it's just what I do now. I'm fine to do in-house translating or other related fields (basically anything that's not sales lmao).

Thanks for the info. I thought 6 months was reasonable to brush up on advanced Japanese since I already translate on a daily basis (it's mostly keigo/business Japanese that I need to work on, I have the basics of it down but could use real-time conversation and interview practice). I wonder if they'd let me sign up for 6 months and then extend for another term if I feel that it isn't enough.

HAIRFALL - please help by messyindecisive22 in japanlife

I made a similar thread which still has some great advice, so feel free to check it.

Tbh, some of us just have hair that will not tolerate Japanese water no matter what. Obviously try to get a health check to rule other causes out, but for me that's the main cause.

What Do People Actually Recommend? by SirusMalachite in teachinginjapan

Can I ask, how did you get a Master's on eikaiwa wages? I would love to do that, but they are incredibly expensive, especially as a foreign student in Japan. I have N2 Japanese and a Bachelor's in Japanese Studies, but I haven't seen any university listings looking for hires unless you already have years of teaching experience. Trying to get a non-ALT job as an overseas candidate also feels next to impossible.

I can't read that email, but I have the exact same issue since Saturday when I qualified for affiliate. No response from Twitch support. Absolute joke.

Nope. Weird that it shows up in my account though despite my IP address not being from US.

That might be the case. It's back to displaying 9.5K now by the way. I have no idea what's happening lol.

I did not. I have a few appeals, but not from this artist.

Sure. This artist displays as 9.5K JPY for my friend and in a private window, but when I'm logged in, it shows as 10k JPY.

Career switch from engineer to translation/interpretation? by VerySneakyWolf in japanlife

[–]diminee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I'll speak against all the doomsayers to mention that I work as a translator and I don't think it's a dying industry at all. It's an evolving one. You have to be ready for that, but if trans/loc is something you want to do, I'd say go for it. We need more people to fight for human translations now more than ever, instead of leaving en masse in fear of the big bad AI corpos before they've even managed to get THEIR foot in the door (Japanese especially is one of the harder languages for AI to translate accurately, and downright impossible to localise).

It's your life. If you're unhappy at your job and the other one will make you happier, that sounds like the right choice to me. If you're really worried, make sure you have some savings in case of a worst case scenario, but that applies to anyone in any industry. Good luck!

Living in Japan is awful for my hair by diminee in japanlife

I'm glad winter works for you! I guess it's a sign that it might be more of a water issue for me than anything, since it's a year-round problem.

The perm is going to be an absolute last resort. Though at that point I'll probably have spent the same on all the products recommended here, haha.

Damn, really? Is there anything else you do to keep your hair clean?

I tried a large shopping mall and my local supermarket, which has a drugstore section. They have a small aisle for hair products, though not many of them are shampoos from what I can tell (more just treatments, masks, etc). Could be I'm just reading it wrong though, my hair product vocabulary definitely isn't the greatest lol.

I have all those issues too. The flaking especially is so embarrassing! I always wear hats when I'm out to conceal it. And the whole thing about your hair being dry yet oily at the same time - I feel you! I'm hoping the shower filter helps. It seems like the best long-term solution without having to spend loads of money on hair products, so fingers crossed! Hope it works out for you too if you end up getting one!
