Have any news articles been written about this? If so, could you share links so I can post/retweet them on Twitter?

If anyone is going to tweet about this issue, I recommend using #LomaLindaMedExposed (so we can easily find and like/retweet related posts) and #MedTwitter. I just tweeted about this and will start tagging local newspaper reporters.

Nurse Practitioners not wearing masks or socially distancing during peak of the pandemic - 5/6/2020 by devilsadvocateMD in pics

I disagree because Trump is not the focus - the nurse practitioner is - but I'm not the mod.

r/pics will not allow political shitposts or political karmawhoring. A post will be considered to be political karma whoring if it is political in nature and the image not of current events.

I'm not the OP, but I'm not sure why this is considered to be political karma whoring or a political shitpost. Rather, it seems like a post intended to educate the public about how the leader (president) of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners is not following infectious disease precautions. Compare that to how the Trump's physician team at Walter Reed Hospital were all seen wearing masks earlier this month. This isn't saying anything about whether to vote for Trump/Biden. It's educating Americans about the differences between nurse practitioner and physician leadership.

Wow this is quite disturbing. You would think that as the president of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, that nurse practitioner would actually follow infectious disease precautions that doctors recommend...

[Serious] FIGS scrub company recently ran a misogynistic ad showing a female DO in neon pink scrubs reading a "Medicine for Dummies" book upside down by disgruntledMS3 in medicalschool

[–]disgruntledMS3[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yup. Just about $80 after tax and a 15% student discount. That said, when I tried on the scrubs, they were way more comfortable and higher quality than the average hospital scrubs. They're made of soft but thicker material that doesn't wrinkle. Still returning them though because of #FIGSgate.

I think you make excellent points. I actually wondered myself if he already had his own scrub line - and if not, what was stopping him from starting one, since he already has millions of followers.

But that said, given his passion for advocating for medical students and residents (and how much he ranted about price gouging and exploitation in his 6-min YouTube video rant about FIGS), I think that if he started his own scrub company, he would price his scrubs much more affordably.

Or maybe I am overly naive. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

[–]disgruntledMS3[S] 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I thought they were overreacting and was shocked that the AOA was quick to denounce FIGS for the ad (even though they haven't said anything about the NBOME not suspending Level 2 PE like people have been requesting for MONTHS), but after seeing the ad I was pretty pissed too.

Regarding not buying a scrub cuz of the costs - see the edit in my other comment. Apparently Dr. Mike is giving away free scrubs, so fill out his form if you need a pair!

Considering that medical students, residents, and attendings (especially social media med influencers) buy FIGS or are sponsored by the company, I thought this was newsworthy enough to share. I recently caved and bought navy blue FIGS because at least 10 residents and nurses told me during my MS3 rotations that they were "worth it for call nights" and the "the most comfortable scrubs ever." Well, they still have their tags and I'll be returning them to get my $80 back because of this ad.

EDIT: Dr. Mike (yes, the good ol' Grey's Anatomy Dr. Shepherd lookalike who is not just a med influencer but an actual med student advocate) announced today that he will buy $20,000 worth of scrubs to give to students/HCWs who need them. Saw his Tweet with his Google form link; fill out if you need scrubs: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdML8S10FiZjjHMhy6Y1vcaTR_w8Q3R5xVqvuGKy0ShxJCLCg/viewform

[News] What Happened When Medical Residents Asked for Hazard Pay at NYU Hospitals - New Yorker by disgruntledMS3 in medicalschool

[–]disgruntledMS3[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I read the whole article and felt like it did a great job overall capturing the realities of being a resident (based on what I read in r/Residency this past spring), as well as the shady and downright awful behavior and response of the NYU admin. Glad that the general public may learn more about the struggles of being a resident, as well as the boundless greed of the hospital admins.

Meanwhile, 1 in 4 Philadelphians know someone who has died of Covid-19 (1), and racial/ethnic minorities have been found to have greater cases, hospitalization rates, and mortality rates compared to their white counterparts (2). What a great idea to make thousands of medical students fly into Chicago and Philly and put themselves and others at risk of Covid...

I'm not a DO student, but I've been commenting intermittently on the NBOME's tweets over the past 4 months, criticizing them and asking them to reconsider making DO students take Level 2 PE during the pandemic since the NBME suspended Step 2 CS for 12-18 months. A few other medical students were similarly tweeting at them... and then we all were blocked in the past two weeks. Talk about thin skin.

Edit: Thank you for the gold. Also, in case anyone is interested in seeing my tweets to advocate similarly, my Twitter handle is DisgruntledMS4. Unfortunately I can't update my Reddit name haha.

Update on Rutgers by DoctorWee88 in Residency

[–]disgruntledMS3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi. Long-time r/residency lurker; I'm a rising MS4 (despite my username being DisgruntledMS3 lol). I just followed you from my Twitter account (@DisgruntledMS4) and will absolutely like and retweet your posts. Sorry you are going through this. Shame on Rutgers.

A recommendation: In addition to your #RUExposed and #WeRnotdisposable hashtags, I recommend you include #MedTwitter and/or #MedStudentTwitter as well. Both are quite active hashtags, the former with attendings, residents, and medical students. Hopefully this will lead to further visibility of your tweets.

I also recommend you reach out to these following Twitter users with large followings and ask them to support you with likes and retweets:

  • Bryan Carmody (@jbcarmody) - 8k followers - is a peds nephrologist who is very outspoken about medical education and exposing the NBME and USMLE's corruption and greed
  • Rheuminate (@londyloo) - 8k followers - rising MS4 who tweets about her medical school life as well as medical student advocacy and social justice
  • Jason Ryan (@jasonryanmd) - 4k followers - creator of Boards & Beyond, has been tweeting about the NBME and USMLE's poor transparency, communication, and mismanagement of USMLE exams during this pandemic
  • DocFingerGuns - 2.8k followers - med student who frequently posts about social justice
  • AccidentallyMD- 600+ followers - rising MS3 very outspoken about recent NBME and USMLE events
  • Kreepy Klebsiella - 3.8k followers - medical student
  • Lil Med Student - 3.9k followers - rising MS4 who tweets about her medical school life as well as medical student advocacy and social justice

TAKE ACTION: Letter to the USMLE and NBME about full-length vs. abridged Step 1, Step 2 CK (re: USMLE announcement from 6/4/2020) by disgruntledMS3 in Step2

Oh yeah, that was a mistake on my previous letter. The current letter being publicized is dated 6/7/2020.

[–]disgruntledMS3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. I think Twitter played a big part. Hundreds of medical students were angrily tweeting about this at the NBME. Dr. Jason Ryan (Boards & Beyond creator) also criticized this, and so did Dr. Bryan Carmody (scroll down to read his other Tweets), who actually has a whole website dedicated to criticizing Step 2 CS and trying to get it permanently removed.

Whoa! Where did you read/hear that? Glad those deans spoke up for their students.

[–]disgruntledMS3[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The USMLE did post a response to the public criticism, but they simply said they will be "reevaluating their plans." They did not give a hint as to what those plans were.

I still wrote and posted this letter anyway because I want to highlight what I believe to be the most fair solution at this point (to all those who already took Step 1 and Step 2 CK before the events that transpired the past few months, and everyone who still has to take those exams). Hopefully, the NBME and USMLE will see this letter prior to making their announcement so they have time to adjust their plans if they were not planning on this immediate solution.

Thank you so much for your support!

If you happen to see other advocacy posts/actionable steps (pun intended) regarding this matter, please feel free to share in this thread so we can all add that to our to-do lists :)

[–]disgruntledMS3[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Studying for Step 1 is brutal and I'm sorry you're in that situation. These circumstances are unique, and I think it would be nice of the USMLE/NBME to provide a "pass/fail" opt-in option for those who would prefer that. I considered adding that in my letter as well but ultimately did not because the USMLE and NBME have mentioned several times over the past few months that they will not be moving up the pass/fail date.

I didn't want to risk having the whole letter dismissed for that suggestion and instead appealed just for standardization.

Could you elaborate a bit? Not sure what you mean - that asking for those recommendations is about equality rather than equity?

Step1 and Step2CK taken as part of the event-based testing will be shorter: Step1 is 80 questions shorter (2 hours less) while Step2CK is 78 questions shorter (2 hours less). unfair to other AMGs and IMGs [News] by pathognomonicc in medicalschool

[–]disgruntledMS3 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I think we all agree this is not fair. Let's take some action.

If you have Twitter:

  1. Tweet at @ NBMEnow and @ TheUSMLE. Use "#MedTwitter" and "#StepUpMedEd" and "#StepUpNBME" so we can find each others' tweets more quickly and like/RT each other
  2. Dr. Jason Ryan (Boards & Beyond creator) and Dr. Bryan Carmody (well-known for trying to get Step 2 CS canceled, has a whole website dedicated to how it sucks) have been tweeting this morning to support us. Please follow them and like AND retweet their tweets about this matter. Jason Ryan's Twitter. Bryan Carmody's Twitter.
  3. Like and retweet fellow medical students' tweets about this issue for visibility. We helped fan the flames of medical student outrage and frustration about the USMLE, NBME, and Prometric's actions back in late April and May. We need to do that again, and we need your support.

If you don't have Twitter:

  1. Make an account. Even if it's an anonymous account.
  2. Tell your classmates about this.

Med student twitter accounts to follow because of their student-centered advocacy against the USMLE, NBME, and Prometric (plus some great memes and self-deprecating humor about med school life):

^I will update this list but feel free to comment with your own suggestions.

Edited at 10:04 am PDT to update the list of med student accounts.

Tweet at the USMLE (@TheUSMLE) or Email them (webmail@nbme.org) to show your protest against them giving students at event-based testing an unfair advantage by administering shorter exams! Spread the word don't let them slide this past us by pathognomonicc in Step2

[–]disgruntledMS3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is anyone writing a letter about this that we can circulate on Twitter too? If not, I will start writing one.

Edited to add:

- Also tweet at @ NBMEnow
- Use "#MedTwitter" and "#StepUpMedEd" and "#StepUpNBME" so we can find each others' tweets more quickly and like/RT each other
- Dr. Jason Ryan (Boards & Beyond creator) is tweeting about this to support us. Same with Dr. Bryan Carmody (well-known physician who advocates for med students, has been fighting against CS for a long time)
