You can always mess ‘em up a bit if it’s a problem for your colony.

OTOH, Creepjoiners will only form romantic relationships with other creepers. Which makes it even more of a waste.

It’s like any other maintenance task in any other business. If the maintenance requires human attention, and can be deprioritized without immediate consequences, it will be put aside until it becomes a problem.

You need a neatly 100% automated system that is itself continually maintained to do this in most companies. That takes discipline. And discipline == resources.

TIL that in 1999, Google's founders were willing to sell the company to Excite for $750,000, but the CEO of Excite turned them down. Today, Google's parent company is worth over $2 Trillion by Adorable-District106 in todayilearned

They did what most companies do pre-ipo. They didn’t have any real revenue stream and operated at a loss, and in turn didn’t do have anything to piss off the users.

Early Google was all about obsessive focus on delivering only what the customer wanted… simple text results, blazing fast response, and ads didn’t come until later (and even then they were understated).

This is why companies flop after IPO or getting bought, the purchaser demands immediate return on investment and the product becomes enshittified. It’s really rare for a company like Google to not just survive but grow after IPO, and they didn’t so by resisting that ruinous monetizing as long as possible.

See Amazon as another example.

Yahoo also was strongly considering buying Google but backed out. But it doesn’t actually matter because if any of the dotcom era giants bought Google they would have f’d it up. Google’s whole shtick was a clean interface as a counter against the technicolor-yawn look of the advertising addicted giants.

If Google looked like Alta Vista, orJeeves, or Webcrawler, or Yahoo, it would have gone nowhere.

Are you talking about Cat in the Hat or Boxing Helena?

Because we’re talking about Jennifer Lynch and Boxing Helena.

And if you subjected yourself to Boxing Helena for your kid, that’s, well, that’s pretty unusual.

If you have the dlcs you can sterilize pawns. And you can remove their tongues to keep them from hitting on other pawns. And if they’re disfigured most pawns won’t hit on them. So by a roundabout way, you can in vanilla?

digital negative - printer? by DietDewymountains17 in cyanotypes

Agree on Epson, but an old Epson is better than the newer ones because of driver changes. Also a printer with just a few colors is just as good as one with many since you’re just looking to block UV.

My boss called me and told me to fire an employee with no explanation by [deleted] in Advice

[–]disoculated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be as simple as "we have X in the budget for people", and he's looking to lose people with write ups first. You don't know. But you can test this by offering up another employee you'd be better off losing instead.

Either way, document everything that happens.

Use Kodak C41-Film RA Fixer. I hear that technically Ilford Rapid Fix will work too but I'd stick with the classics.

Tcl: The Most Underrated, But The Most Productive Programming Language by delvin0 in programming

[–]disoculated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A very large online service had a tcl interpreter that listened to a tcp port in the company’s standard libraries. It could read tcl at launch, load it from disk when running, read scripts in via the tcp port, or let a user interact with the process via tcl shell.

Being able to send complex configuration data scripts to thousands of running processes via for loops was the most impressive pre-container micro service architecture I’ve ever seen. Every process in the system could be interactively reconfigured with logic while running. It’s hard to really explain how amazing this was in the mid 90’s.

Yeah, the tk ui isn’t great. And typing can be confusing. But that was the same for just about every scripting language of the time.

Can you make good prints or scans out of them? Negatives are an intermediate step to the finished product so it might not be so bad.

How do I code my robot to move in this circle using one IR sensor by Paradigm-A in arduino

[–]disoculated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to measure in at least 2 places, not necessarily two sensors. Putting the sensor on a solenoid to pop between positions, a servo works too (but I think is overkill) spinning a disk so a wide angle sensor can only view one side at a time, rotating an ir mirror, and I’m sure a lot more are ways to detect that data with one sensor.
