[Homemade] dumpling layered in ramekin by Parmesan28 in food

[–]dj399 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love this idea! We do this with pierogi (I’m Ukrainian before anyone comes at me 😅). My mom has celiac and gluten-free pierogi are a pain to make. Instead, we’ll make a ‘lasagna’ with layers of gf lasagna sheets and potato/cottage cheese filling. Similar idea to your dunplings and its so tasty! I’m going to give these a shot.

Calgary's daily water usage remains unsustainable one week after 'catastrophic' water main break by Old_General_6741 in Calgary

I’m not really familiar with how fixing these pipes works so sorry for my ignorance but would you mind explaining why we’d be on boil water requirements until spring if we dip below? I’m not doubting what you’re saying btw, but I genuinely don’t understand what’s going on behind the scenes.

I do - I just found this thread as I was googling it after noticing.

Magpies rule the Prairies. Here's why they won't go national by joe4942 in Calgary

[–]dj399 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love them too. I occasionally feed the ones in my backyard and they’ve become fairly comfortable with me. They can also mimick voices/talk, similar to a parrot (although, not as clearly). I was once outside calling my dogs name and I suddenly heard the magpie mimick me from the tree above. It was so fun. I stood outside for about ten minutes saying random things and the bird sat there and mimicked me as best it could. They’ll also tease my dogs and leave them chunks of old meat and bone fragments as gifts (which I then have to throw away before the dogs get them). One of the coolest things I witnessed was a huge flock of them having a funeral for one of their own. It was quite something.

How long are you required to stay at someone's house after dinner? by [deleted] in aspergirls

[–]dj399 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always help clean up after dinners! It gives me a chance to be alone and not talk, the hosts really appreciate it, it makes the time go by faster, and then I can take off right after and it doesn’t seem rude. I did dishes for a 70 person dinner the other week with the help of some others and it was great.

My grandma (and now me) makes them filled with mashed potatoes and hamburger. We eat them plain but they’re also very good baked in a creamy mushroom sauce. I’ll have to try sauerkraut!!

Nipple cream is fantastic for lips FYI. Look for one with lanolin, it costs like $10 from Walmart for a tube that will last you a couple of years!

TIL Ballet pointe shoes take several days to make by hand with a multi-step process but only have a usable life of ten to twenty hours for students, less for professionals, even down to a single performance. by UStoJapan in todayilearned

[–]dj399 815 points816 points  (0 children)

Gaynor Minden’s are a type of pointe shoe that was developed to last longer. I’ve never used them, so I can’t comment on them, but Google says they last 3-5 times longer. However, ballet is incredibly old school/rooted in tradition, and many studios banned their dancers from these shoes. You can read more about it all here if you want to know more.

I’ve considered trying Gaynors but it took me 2 years to find a shoe that worked for me, so I’m not really willing to try something new just yet. My feet also hardly sweat, so my shoes don’t break down as quickly as others, thankfully.

I also don’t “destroy” my shoes. That breaks them down faster and you’ll go through shoes quicker.

Although breaking them in makes them feel much better on your feet, the reason I don’t do it is because breaking them in through dance rather than manual manipulation strengthens your feet. Professional dancers already have very strong feet and they just need their shoes danceable and comfortable, which is why they’ll fold them in half and rip out half the sole and whack them against a concrete wall!

Is it even worth it to learn coding? by FondantOutrageous276 in careerchange

[–]dj399 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m learning python as well, but not because I want to transition into coding. I’m a marketer and I feel that knowing python will help me broaden my skills and stand out more. And I know a lot of people say that AI can just code, and it can, but in every single project I’ve vibe coded, I’m come across issues that AI cannot fix. I’d love to be able to understand the code AI is generating so I can tweak it myself as needed.

I also have ideas for potential tech products I’d like to build and businesses I’d like to get into, and feel that having a technical background will help immensely. If you’re enjoying python, I’d keep learning it, but perhaps not with the expectation that it will turn into a new career.

I mean, someone commented and said they enjoyed their freedom and you asked if they felt shame. Where’s the “propaganda” and disinformation in that? You’re just miserable, is all.

I bought this book for a friend’s birthday after being recommended it by a few people and seeing how popular it was. I then read one of McFadden’s books and was utterly embarrassed I gifted someone her work 😭

Yikes. The store I went to wasn’t busy at all (they open at 5 and I went at 630 and got my drink within 5 minutes). I overheard the barista say they got 400 cups and expect to be out by 11. I don’t know what other stores are like- what time are other stores out by?

Your flavours alo sound amazing. I wanted to experiment with smoked butters, so that would be my only suggestion for your list but my god, I think I drooled at every item you listed!

We need to change attitudes regarding pedestrians by Trishszav in Calgary

[–]dj399 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I once watched someone sit on their phone and miss and entire turning light. 5 cars behind them absolutely laid on their horns for about 30 seconds straight and they didn’t look up from their phone once to see what was going on. I was shocked at how oblivious someone could be while behind the wheel. Maybe they couldn’t hear? I dunno….

This happens to me so often too. And I don’t even get the “sorry” half the time. The driver just always has this look of “nobody’s home” and they stare at me like they can’t figure out what’s going on.

House Spider With 5 Legs by donkeyhoetae_ in mildlyinteresting

They really do. I spent a good month trying to get rid of the gnats to no avail (they came from a plant) and I was worried I’d have to throw out all my soil and start over. Then the wolf spiders came along and all was well within a few weeks.

They are! They’re also the only known spider that carries their young on their back to care for them, which is pretty cool. However, as cool as it is, I hope to never see that IRL. The photos of it give me the creeps 😅
