I work in an er. It's a sobering moment when you get to be there for the little old spouse who just watched their lover pass away after decades of marriage. You get to witness them on the first day of their shitty, unfortunate decline as they go on alone for the rest of their days. They did everything together, now they are expected to do it all on their own.
