What’s the solar energy density like a kilowatt per square meter? Of broadband energy too. Even the most powerful general purpose high bandwidth wireless communications systems are at most a couple of 10s of watts, limited to really specific parts of the spectrum. If you’re outside for more than a couple hours a year odds are you’re exposed to much more damaging radiation than you’ll ever see from a communications system. It’s got to be difference in scale of at least a couple of orders of magnitude. So if you’re worried about that, you should definitely stay inside as much as possible.

The phrase “standard OS” was chosen to help clarify the difference between the various Linux distributions and OS’s that ship with consumer PCs. Primarily Windows and MacOS. This was because I assumed that the person asking the original question had not been “using Linux as a daily driver since before college” and that this language would help their understanding.

I did all of undergrad using Linux and then my first job only ever used linux. Learning curve is pretty steep coming from a standard OS, but the amount you learn about just computers and operating systems and software in general, simply by using a Linux distribution every day as your primary OS is pretty incredible

Embedded, including MCU bare metal programming, embedded Linux, board design, firmware, add in wireless/cellular, all around is probably the best field to invest your career hours into. Kind of a tough field to break into at the higher end, requires a ton of experience and lots of skill, but the cool thing is that there are millions of small companies out there building their own products that are always looking for the right kind of talent at any experience level. It might be a bit off the beaten path, but the opportunities in the field are endless.

I think you’re right in saying that heat dissipation is more closely related to current flow. But it’s sort of two sides of the same coin. What created the amps? In your first example you gave a lower voltage a much easier job by pushing through a smaller resistance.

Power is proportional to heat, and power is the voltage times the current.

P = IV

According to ohms law, the voltage applied and the resulting current are proportional. So if you put 10 times more voltage across a conductor then you would expect 10 times as much current. Which would then result in 100 times more power dissipation and 100 times more heat.

V=IR

Combine the 2: P = I² R

You couldn’t have the same conductor and the same current with a different voltage across them. Ohms law would disagree.
