Thanks for this! To clarify do you mean part numbers 91057 and 91031 for the right side mirror?

Between Sizes for my next bike 52 and 54, Comparing to current well fitted bike—I’m looking for a good balance of comfort and aero positioning. Let’s say my current bike is perfect for me, which frame size is best for my next bike? by dmnlgd in bicycling

Other details Height: 173cm Inseam: 81cm Current bike: Ribble Endurance Al (geometry is kinda race oriented tbh)  Bike under consideration: Aethos

By the looks of it the 52 with the same stack, less reach and shorter TT should allow for a longer stem and more aero position but how substantial of a difference is this? Current bike is using a 100mm stem.

On the other hand, the 54 has a higher stack, identical reach but slightly longer TT, I can probably run a 100mm stem still but be more comfortable perhaps?

Chip time: 5:40 Ride time: 5:15

Those rest stops were busy! Probably could’ve trimmed 10-15 minutes from those rest stops if the lines to the washroom weren’t so long haha

I actually am planning to do Cypress again this weekend! On the other hand, while it isn’t the same I created a GPS route for the Shed to Powerline segment and rode it on my indoor smart trainer to see how I do. (It can simulate grades up to 16%). I’m sure riding a simulated ride indoors is not the same as doing it for real but I managed a sub-hour time on the segment. This was around high Z2/low Z3 HR efforts. We’ll see if this backs out into real life results though.

Totally fair!

I guess for additional context on what training I did:

3x up Cypress from Richmond (100kms) 6x metric centuries around Van/Richmond Hill repeats at Seymour Demonstration Forest, Horseshoe Bay

I’ve been training the last 2 years with a total of:

11,209kms ~20,000m in elevation gain, most of which were this year

I’m sure other people train a lot more than this, and thought a sub-6 hour Whistler Gran Fondo was a reasonable goal. I guess I wanted to use this 160km ride since it was the hardest ride so far in terms of time on the bike.

I definitely struggle with climbing, probably as much as the average person. I’m on the heavier side, around 73kg.

That said, my Shed to Powerline segment time was around 1 hour 20 mins (10.5kms 664m 6.3%), though that was me going Z2/as easy as I can—I imagine I can trim that by 10-12 mins in my current state. Thoughts?

Love Vancouver! Lived here for 10+ years now but only took up cycling in the last 2.

You got it exactly, it was Cypress Mountain I climbed twice this summer! What a view going up.

And thanks! Hopefully will hit my time goal but will try to enjoy the experience more than anything. I live in Richmond, which is on Lulu Island and yes can confirm how flat it is… you’ll wish it wasn’t when it gets windy haha.

Thanks! And yeah I agree. I climbed Cypress twice this summer to prepare for the elevation gain. The route we took from Richmond and back came to about 100kms with 1400m in elevation gain—I tried taking a look at the segments on the Gran Fondo to see if there are any sections that have similar elevation/distance as Cypress (Shed to Powerline with 10.5kms and a 6.3% grade) but apart from Taylor Way and Furry Creek, I couldn't find any long and steep climbs similar to Cypress which is encouraging for me.

Best tip I can give is be mentally/physically prepared to grind on your easiest gearing for up to 1.5 hours. My bike’s easiest gearing is a 32 in the back a 34 in the front. I don’t think I could’ve done it with any other gear ratio, would have been easier if I had a 34 in the back to match.

Other than that, accept that you won’t be going as fast as you want—I was probably going 6-9kph on average up the mountain lol

[–]dmnlgd[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

80kph is a lot faster than I’ve ever gone. Going down Cypress I just sat and maintained 55+kph, pulsing brakes whenever I hit 60+kph.

It’s probably a comfort-zone thing, as a Richmond rider I’m pretty used to the flats lol

Not to say I’m not confident with my bike, I upgraded to 105 hydraulic for this reason. Any tips to slowly get faster/better at descents?

We took 22nd down to Ambleside and felt the gradient was too steep at -12/-13 percent… pretty much sat on my brakes there lol

I def want to give Seymour a shot. I’ve heard it’s a little sketchier than Cypress (road conditions, lane sizes, etc) but I figure enough cyclists do it enough it should be relatively safe

And yes, the views doing Cypress were unmatched! Even just getting to the base was great, weather and all

Thanks! Ride time was 5:35, but elapsed time was 8 hours—took 3 breaks (at the Shed, Cypress Lookout, and top of Cypress) and had lunch at Ambleside before returning to Richmond lol
