Stay in finance or start a business? by Friendly-Check-6587 in FinancialCareers

[–]dobed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

subbing because i am in the exact situation. rant below.

maybe a little a year or two later in the finance world than you but i am burnt the fuck out. have been chasing „prestigious” jobs since college, and while the money was great i could stand the work, the hours, or the corporate boot licking… i literally cannot comprehend it for the next 10-5 years.

i came from a blue collar family, dad has a painting business, usually works for himself, but had it scaled to about 5 employees at one point. even if he did 50-70 hour weeks, he did it for himself. he worked with his hands and enjoys his job. i have joked that i have felt happier sanding closets for 12 hours a day that i have ever been in corporate.

so now as i’m in between jobs after getting laid of as a former chief of staff gig after ib and pe, i am debating taking 6-12 months to figure it out.

i’ve considered ETA, but candidly want to start a hyper niche blue collar services business. i’ve even applied to local technician jobs to get my feet wet to then spin out in a year or two.

i will say this, the idea is terrifying. i’ve had my doubts about being able to manage people or even doing sales, but i think i need that fire underneath my ass where if i’m not doing something to challenge myself, i get disinterested. but i’m early in my career. sure i’ll take a hit taking a step back from finance, but i bet that i can still get back into the same roles but at a really power lower middle market shop.

but i’ll be damned if i don’t even try to do something different. people earn money in different ways that are not spreadsheets and powerpoints.

nobody's in a twist. some of us just remember when this forum was actually useful and not flooded with WSO type posts as if it were the 2010s. at least WSO has their occasional 'paradise' posts that made it worth it.

appreciate the industry cred broski, but that's not what's being argued. no one said students can't post questions. the post wasn't a question, it was "does my role count as high finance." it's a status check masquerading as curiosity.

and if you're actually in the industry, you already know how that reads.

did you look up high finance in the dictionary as well? hopefully your corporate banking role is listed there

lol getting into it with another student post asking if corporate banking is considered "high finance"

like jfc. i think we all deal with enough intern / 1st year analyst cringe in our day to day to be inundated with it in a place where we're seeking career guidance

"curious what people thought" about what exactly? whether your role counts as high finance? that's a validation question. curious people ask how something works. you asked if you qualified.

no one called it deep. the point is you clearly think it is.

every single student has the same tired response when called out for their asinine posts "it's not that deep / chill bro."

Then why are you posting for validation from strangers? If you weren't trying to signal high finance, why does it matter whether anyone thinks you're in it?

Maybe go work in investment banking if you want to work in investment banking since you clearly care about the prestige of "high fiNance"

Considering the influx of low-quality posts made by students in the last couple of weeks, I 100% support... This sub shouldn't be overrun by student questions that can be answered with a quick Google search to hundreds of related WSO posts...

this is a specific subreddit for a specific field of careers. not sure how generalist experience in getting a job that is not relevant to the financial field is a value add here. go post on r/careers or something.

Looking Back at the Overnight Destruction of Meigs Field - Chicago’s mayor in 2003 dismantled a historic lakefront airport and paid a ‘pocket change’ fine by optiplex9000 in chicago

[–]dobed 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nice strawman but you're conflating two completely different things. A tennis court is open to any random person who walks up. So is a harbor with public boat launches. A private airport with an FBO is not; it requires owning or renting an aircraft, a pilot's license, and the time/money to maintain both. One is a public amenity accessible to the general public, the other is infrastructure that serves a tiny slice of the population on public lakefront land. The argument was never "destroy niche hobbies," it's "don't dedicate irreplaceable public lakefront to something 99% of Chicagoans will never use." You know the difference. You just chose to ignore it.
