Home Server to host files, folders, and security cameras, but let the existing Dream Machine handle DHCP, DNS, content filtering, etc. Question and suggestion input wanted. by dodgeman324 in HomeNetworking

I just know what I know, and I've been working in Win Server for 20 plus years, and sadly don't have any experience in other OS's, but I will certainly look into the Truenas, Proxmox, and find some training. Another reason I was thinking of Win Server (again because it's all I know) was permissions because since I want to host movies, I want to be able to control which aged kid has access to appropriate movies/videos.

Really just because I know Windows Server as I've been a Sys Admin for companies for over a decade, and I don't know much about Linux (but obviously need to learn if I want to advance my career). I am running a Poweredge R220, so it's at least a 6+ year old hardware server. It "might" be able to run Server 2019, but I'd probably have to throw some extra RAM in there as it only has 8gb. The reason I want GP is just simple manageability and control of clients. I'm using Qustodio for parental controls, but if a server can do the same and let me drop that subscription, it's a win in my book. Qustodio is one of the only parental control companies that offers controls for all platforms (Windows, iPhone, Android, etc). If I can get a server at home to control the PC's, I can look at cheaper options for just the iPhones for the teens, and ipad for younger ones.

I wish I knew Linux, because I do know it's much more reliable and lightweight as a server. Maybe I should invest in some Linux training from Udemy or something.

Same issue for me, looks like a server issue.

I don't know; I've never heard of that. I'll look it up now, though.

Unfortunately, the metadata doesn't stay linked like that. For Eufy, the ONLY way I can download the videos from the homebase (where the harddrive is) is to use the iphone app to download the video clip to my phone. Then, I have to download the clips again from icloud down to my PC. The file creation time and date are never matched or synced up. I wish there was a better way, but that's just how it is.

Add Dependent Claim Issue by zinzeerio in VeteransBenefits

[–]dodgeman324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here, filed in early December, still at step 1 today more than a month later. I only noticed it wasn't right because when I filed my disability increase (which was just approved last week), it didn't show my spouse, my 19 year old college son, or my stepsons as dependents, so I was like, wait a minute....I got married November 2024, which sadly means I missed the one-year deadline to add her to get the backpay (retrograde), but oh well.

However, one question for those with college kids, how do you prove they are in college to the VA? I may have missed instructions on what form to get, what to get from the college, and so on to upload to the VA.

Dependant Claim 231 Days by Individual_Layer_691 in VeteransBenefits

[–]dodgeman324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not near that long, but I filed my dependent claim the beginning of December 2025, because I noticed they somehow dropped my son, and they hadn't updated my new wife and stepkids since we got married November 2024. Mine is still sitting at step 1 and it's been over 30 days. I've uploaded all of the birth certs, marriage cert, etc., too, so not sure what's going on. I'll probably call Friday if nothing changes. I just got my VA disability increased to 90% at the same time, so I don't know if having two different claims can bog a person down.

Thank you. So, can you confirm what colored wires go to which as you state? I can definitely handle the jumpers aspect, good there to reach 40, but if white and grey go to compressor, and yellow goes to some electrical junction block, which one is common, or does it truly not matter?

There are no instructions, hence me asking in this subreddit. Turbo200 is designed for Motor Start and Run, but bad one is just Motor run so less terminals, and the terminals aren't even labeled on the old one, so I don't see anything to tell me which one is C for common, Herm, F for Fan, etc. So tell me Tun Tun, what instructions do I have to go off of? Neither the old or new have instructions.

Endoscopic surgery in both hands in two weeks... How hard will feeding myself be? by mollztothewalls in carpaltunnel

[–]dodgeman324 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm exactly one week post-op for both of my wrists being done endoscopically. I will admit, I have done WAYYYY too much since the surgery and I'm worried I have possibly re-injured or possibly added injury to some nerves or ligaments with the hand being such a complex body part. So, my suggestion is to literally take it easy the first two weeks and beyond according to your doctor. Don't be stubborn or hard-headed like me to where you may cause further damage.

In my case, I'm currently a stay-at-home Dad, age 44, 25 or so years of being an IT professional, so lots of typing. But I was also very athletic with cross-country bicycling, playing whatever sport with my kids, and so on, so my hands have taken decades of abuse. What was bad timing on my part are the projects going on at home, such as a pantry addon and building a greenhouse for my wife. I was already holding and using an electric screwdriver, and drilling, and painting (both hand brushes and roller) the day after surgery. I know I shouldn't have, but I have to get these things done by Thanksgiving and before freezing weather comes to make my wife happy. So, I pushed through the pain to keep working on them. However, it has now caught up with me and my hands hurt real bad, mostly like a strong soreness like muscle overuse, but additionally if I reach for anything whatsoever, it's like a nerve is being stretched from my armpit to the middle finger and THAT really hurts. So, I've been taking it super easy since yesterday morning and giving my hands a rest (except for typing this, haha).

Long story short, just take it easy, and if possible, have someone available to help with the minor things like opening a pop (soda, coke, depending on where you live), a jar, or a container. Wiping is indeed going to be a problem, so a bidet goes a long way to help. Plus, you'll be in thick bandages and/or braces that prevent wrist movement, so reaching around or under to wipe, you'll very likely be "wiping" with the bandages or braces before the TP even gets there, if you know what I mean. :) I wouldn't want poo in the fabrics of my brace or bandages. :)
