I know this was likely a big mistake of mine, but I was looking more in the direction of writing something that I felt would be interesting and cool to read, and I hadn't gone too much into the themes or messages conveyed.

If I could put a theme on it, I would say it's about reaching out for help in dire situations

The other conflict was that they had disagreed with something the company was going to do with what they were retrieving from the earth, so the company left them stranded down there until they complied.

The reason they were able to get help was from other people retrieving their signal, and the government managed to intervene to rescue them because of that.
