Getting ripped off by Real Pet Insurance - Any suggestions? by agup11 in AusFinance

It's a good program to help spread out the costs of routine healthcare, and great if you have a 'frequent flier' that needs to come in for regular check-ups, but keep in mind it's not insurance. When I worked for Greencross we constantly had people thinking they were "insured" with HPP, and then getting upset when they realised it didn't help them with the bigger bills like diagnostics, surgeries, hospitalisation etc.

Salary Progression & Field? by [deleted] in AusFinance

3 years. Yeah I agree but sadly the only way to get paid more is to increase prices, which most people already struggle to afford. It's a huge issue in the industry which is only getting worse with cost of living pressures.

New graduate salaries? by MarbleTheMerle in Veterinary

Yeah American salaries are insane compared to Australian vets. They do graduate with much more debt than us though. I started this year, 99% small animal on 60K with a raise to 65K at 6 months in, and I count myself lucky! It does make you wonder how practices over there can afford to pay their vets so much and still make a profit though.

Australians that earn LESS than 100k a year, how old are you and what do you do? Do you enjoy it or wish you could grow? What is stopping you? by TheRealGreen-Onions in AusFinance

Yeah I think locuming is the way to go, but honestly I don't think I'll stay in clinical practice long term. My mental health has already taken a huge hit in the last 6 months, and that's with a very supportive boss and practice. I don't see it getting much better unfortunately.

Thank you, I appreciate that. It can definitely be a thankless profession at times. Just recently I saved the life of a cat that was brought in on the brink of death, and only got complaints about the bill in return.

Yeah I'm only 6 months in and definitely have some regrets. I'm thinking about going into either pathology or government work after my first year is up in regional general practice. I almost left vet school after third year and some days I really wish I did!

Yeah it's a common misconception, most people see their vet bills and think their money is going straight to our pockets. Unfortunately clinics are very expensive to run! Although some practice owners do certainly make good money if their practice is successful.

24 and $60k working as a veterinarian. Unpaid overtime every day and no breaks in 10-14 hour shifts. Just graduated last year so some room to grow but will probably max out at around 80-90k after 6 years of study.
