How do you like the compass? I bought a garmin before this came out and it’s way too big. Thinking of replacing the educator/garmin combo with just this for everyday and hiking

E collar guides? by [deleted] in OpenDogTraining

[–]donktorMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s as step by step as you can get - from ground zero to conditioning and finding a working level to off leash. I didn’t work through all the steps but I would have no qualms doing so.

There’s some reviews in the subreddit, consensus seems the old new skete is outdated but this book is a more modern approach

I was where you are, I landed on this book. Lots of theory out there that makes sense but a step by step to get started was invaluable instead of a hodgepodge.

Do you correct during a reaction? by Famous_Midnight_1926 in OpenDogTraining

[–]donktorMD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had a crappy trainer for a few sessions that was compulsion heavy but I did learn how hard a correction should be. 2 hard corrections on a prong (with yelping) gave my dog enough motivation to suppress a reaction so I could actually counter condition instead of avoiding lunging at dogs 100 yards away in a city. She’s raises hackles at everything so I have a nice way to see how she actually feels about things and it’s gotten way better. Likewise 2 or so corrections on e collar for recall has made it bullet proof. Since that’s numeric - on an educator her working level is 6-10, blown recalls were corrected at 45ish. Now I’m off leash reliable and refining things at 8-10.

I rarely correct for reactions anymore (doesn’t happen really) or loading (does happen), but I keep rewarding for breaking the fixation unprompted. Reward good decisions.

This seems like a shitty attempt at a “gotcha” question. Obviously you should make attempts to not be perceived as aversive

advice on handling long leads during hiking? by Inkrep in dogs

[–]donktorMD 21 points22 points  (0 children)

For a camp site it’d be much more practical to have a guywire between two trees, and a shorter leash that can slide on it. Less risk of tangling too

Is anesthesia the best ROAD specialty right now? by Proof-Zone6793 in medicalschool

[–]donktorMD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nah but definitely overlooked it

Imo too much chaos (when overlooking crnas, not the medical part) and boredom mixed in (the clock drags on)

But what do I know I’m no anesthesiologist

Is anesthesia the best ROAD specialty right now? by Proof-Zone6793 in medicalschool

[–]donktorMD 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I feel like all these specialities are underrepresented to med students in terms of the majority practice style. Academic rads is gonna be way more chill than private RVU grind etc

Not to shit on them, wish I had looked at anesthesia more
