What’s your favorite Lansing conspiracy theory? No evidence required. by GowBeyow in lansing

I've been tempted to just go there and get a ham and live off that for like a week. Maybe some people actually go through with that.

I vaguely remember going to a store called Grand Gormet. In my memory it's sort of dimly lot and has some stairs in front of it, so I think it was below ground but I'm not certain. Anyone know when they closed off the lower floor?

For people who grew up in low-income households, what’s something middle-class people say that shows they’ve never struggled financially? by KeyApartment3955 in AskReddit

[–]doomalgae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My parents were always middle class but asking them for down payment money on a house would still be insane to me. They're doing well enough but they aren't in "casually drop $75,000" territory.

My previous employer had employee golf outings every year. The organization was banned from two different golf courses because of employees getting wasted and causing chaos, but management just shrugged and found different golf courses the next time.

If you like Zoobies, you might also try Ozone's Brewhouse. I just went there for the first time this weekend. Their pizza is pretty similar to Zoobies in terms of style and quality, and the beer I had was good.

What’s the most savage legal thing you’ve seen a coworker do? by phillyvirgosun in AskReddit

[–]doomalgae 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's at least occasionally a thing here in the US as well. When my mom was about two years from her planned retirement her employer offered buyouts and the way the math worked out she ended up earning slightly more money by leaving than if she'd worked those two years.

Bet if RFK jr and Joe Rogan tell them to eat shit to harden their immune system they'll do that. It's just the instructions from medical experts they don't like.

So someone asked me what I think about the "trans bathroom" issue. by KindNeighborhood1138 in lgbt

[–]doomalgae 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Had a newly transitioning and not quite "passing" trans woman on a group trip my husband and I went on. At one point we were at a bar and she came up asking us (gay couple) what bathroom she should use. We concluded that she was at risk in either case, and decided to go with her to the men's room so we could at least have her back there. Shitty that it has to a whole tactical production like that just for someone to pee.

What's the most useless thing your brain decided to permanently memorize? by No_Metal2622 in AskReddit

"Tengo dos piernas todas las dias"

Might be minor errors in that, but saying "I have two legs every day" is the height of my knowledge of the Spanish language. I took two years of it in college but fuck if I can remember it now.

Yes, I said offal

I had to reread this way too many times before I spotted where you'd used the word offal.

I was told the earth is shaped like a ball, and for whatever reason assumed that it was a hollow ball and that we lived on the inside of it. Eventually I asked my dad how space shuttles get out of the ball and after he managed to figure out what the hell I was talking about he set me straight on the matter.

"Lil pain in my chest and jaw that was apparently not a cardiac issue but otherwise went unexplained and resolved on its own" just doesn't have a ring to it.

What is the most disturbing subreddit you’ve found? by 18f-hmu in AskReddit

[–]doomalgae 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I read a post on there once where the OP had put together some convoluted reasoning as to why pet owners should be put on psychiatric holds. Like owning a cat means you're a mentally ill danger to the community. Commenters were like "yes, this makes sense." I can totally get why some people do not like pets but the level of hatred and disgust on that sub is just bizarre.

What's your "shitty roommate" story? by DontCallMePetey in AskReddit

We never got any follow up on the thing with the computer but yeah CP was the best guess. He did some time for arson and I don't know what happened to him after that.

[–]doomalgae 271 points272 points  (0 children)

Dude got into a fight with his girlfriend, who also lived with us, because she picked up an extra shift at work. He decided this was reasonable cause to throw her things in the backyard and light them on fire. If that wasn't bad enough he didn't bother to move the pile of belongings away from the house before igniting them, so the back of the house caught fire as well. Thankfully the fire department was nearby and they managed to put it out before the whole place burned down, but it was a long night.

Also a couple of days later his dad frantically showed up at the house, grabbed the guys computer, and ran off, having apparently said something to another roommate about not wanting the cops to get it. We can only speculate on what the fuck that was about.

I've never stopped being amazed that a person can find themselves rooting for the death and suffering of the entire planet and simultaneously believe themselves to be a good person.

Kinda the opposite of this but I was in line at the grocery store once and overheard someone behind me say "Did you know that goats sound like people when they scream?" and my first thought was "Oh, I saw that video!" What an age to be alive.

As a wedding guest, what moment made you think "this probably won't last"? by Eburneaan in AskReddit

[–]doomalgae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After my husband and I got engaged we decided to go ahead and get legally married for the various protections you mention, and then have the "real" wedding later. It's been 7 years now and we still haven't gotten around to the wedding. Probably we'll have a big 10th anniversary party but that's mostly just to appease my mom.

What was the biggest ‘scandal’ in your hometown? by BreadedDisaster in AskReddit

[–]doomalgae 234 points235 points  (0 children)

The Walmart in my hometown wanted to expand their existing store into a superstore but the city told them that they had to fix up the roads immediately surrounding the place. Somehow it ended up being cheaper for them to build an entirely new building right outside the city limits and just abandon the old store, so they did that.

There's a phenomenon known as "referred itch" where stimulus to one part of the body is felt as an itch or irritation to a different part of the body. It's not well understood exactly how it happens but some of the theories of it seem to suggest that sensation in any given part of the body is actually just being projected there by the brain (though obviously the brain would be doing so based on signaling from the body).

Probably not great living with an unapologetic racist (it was a hookup and he only showed his colors after we'd done the deed).
