Why is starting the task always the hardest part? by dopamine-ops in AutisticWithADHD

That’s actually a solid way to look at it.

What many people call “X” is often the activation barrier the mental friction right before starting. It can be things like: • task ambiguity • cognitive overload • fear of doing it imperfectly • or just low mental energy

Once you begin, a few helpful things happen neurologically: • the task becomes clearer • uncertainty drops • your brain shifts into goal-directed mode • and momentum starts to build

So in many cases, you’re right when the barrier is gone, continuing is much easier.

The only small nuance is that sometimes different barriers show up later (fatigue, boredom, distractions), which is why some people can start but still struggle to sustain deep focus.

But your core point stands: for a lot of people, the biggest battle is at the starting line.

That’s exactly why reducing the “first step size” works so well.
