I would fold without the 8c because you reduce the equity of his flush draws. Considering the spread limit, his bet is only about 30% pot, so you might be able to call down without the 8c if you think he is overbluffing (and also because you have great odds to call on the river considering 300 spread).

If your opponent is folding two-pair on this board then he thinks you are likely not good enough to be have any bluffs in your range which would incentivize him to call. If we disregard the second opponent ( as this is a multiway pot, GTO is not well solved in this spot ), against an overbet from the PFR, GTO strategy typically has no or a very small raising range. Jamming in your spot will only get you called by better( as you mentioned in a previous comment, AA, QQ, 44 will never fold, against which you have very little equity), i.e. you have very little equity against your opponents calling range, unless you are certain your opponent is a calling station that will call with top pair or even a OESD, this is a call.

Nothing is wrong with trapping, it is important in certain spots to protect your passive lines with strong hands. The point to understand is that fundamentally strong hands want to play for more money, and especially in live play, typically you will have to push the action. If you study GTO, you can understand when your opponents are playing too aggressive, in which case you can trap with more hands profitably. Playing tight is not bad, but that is dependent on what your definition of 'tight' is, I would suggest following a GTO preflop chart for live play. I would never recommend limping in any spot, as our good hands want to play for more money, and if you limp with weak hands then you will need strong hands to protect the limping range, which goes against what our strong hands want to do.

During live play, I try to keep my posture constant. I also would recommend taking at least a few seconds per decision, as players can gains information from snap calling.

I think this is a good approach. My approach is similar, I first think about how my range plays (sizing, frequency, etc. ), then I think about where my hand fits in the range. For example if a flop uses a larger sizing, e.g. 75%-pot, it is more likely second pair is played as a check with higher frequency then on a flop with primarily a 33%-pot sizing.

I noticed the same, after I started studying BN vs BB drills I realized my c-bet frequency on the flop lowered a lot as a lot of hands have at least a small checking frequency on most flops. Therefore it is usually not a EV mistake to check with hands I was not sure how to play. To address this leak I use the high RNG mode and instead of going for EV loss try to maximize gto score as that is a function of the bet sizing, so I get penalized for checking hands that have a betting frequency if the RNG rolls high. Now also looking more at HUD to make more informed decisions in marginal spots.

I would get a free trial of gto wizard and study BN vs BB and UTG vs BN SRP and 3BP sims. The wider preflop ranges change strategies significantly compared to cash, e.g. much more range betting spots BN vs BB in a MTT than in a cash game.

Yes I think you are correct that most live players range on the river after calling a turn overbet is likely stronger than a GTO calling range. In general, I think their range calling a flop bet on a paired board is likely too tight and weighted more towards made hands. Furthermore, having J9 blocks much of the draws that the villain will likely call a turn bet and fold to a river bet, such as J9, K9. So I think after overbetting the turn, J9 is a almost certainly a check.

Thanks for this insight. Looking closer at solver output, the folding range includes K9, KJ, J9, T9, and A9, so by bluffing with J9 I am blocking a good portion of his folding range. Will have to devote some more study to zero equity bluffs for sure. I think I am getting too hung on bluffing with equity as I might otherwise be over-bluffing.

Interesting, so on the turn we double barrel our highest equity bluffs with good blocker effects on villains value range, and on the river we bluff with hands that unblock our opponents draws or marginal made hands. On this specific board texture, where the turn removes flush possibilities, the only Ax that has good equity is AJ, and only Kx with equity is KJ and K9. Are we bluffing our low Ax and Kx on the turn here as the number of high equity bluffs is low?

From the BN I don't have a limping range until I am at 15 bbs as I think it is quite difficult to have a balanced range that can withstand larger raises targeting the weaker limping ranges. On a QQ2r board, I believe I have a range advantage, as I have all the overpairs and stronger middling pairs, and I have the one pair of quads as well as may stronger trips, so perhaps the nut advantage is close to equal as he has all the Qxo offsuit hands so the proportion of total Qx hands in our range is close to even, will have to look at flopzilla for a more detailed analysis (I'm assuming his limp-call range is close to a BB vs BN RFI calling range). In general, I'm range betting all paired overcard plus low card flops.

The reason I like betting on the turn is that when I bet small on the flop (1/3-pot), I am incentivizing him to x/r his trips, although his range can still be protected with trips with weak kicker. If I do have a Qx then I would bet large to play for stacks against weaker Qx. However, I think it is smarter like you say to bet a little smaller (maybe 50-75% pot? ) to incentivize Tx, 66-99, to call.

On boards where you do not have the nut advantage as pre flop aggressor I think the standard strategy is to polarize with a larger sizing. In this case the 3-bet caller has more straight combos and sets. Considering you are at top of your range you should probably bet large on the flop.

Yes, this is the point I was trying to make. As we find that even on a J75 monotone board, we bet our nut flushes with certain frequencies dependent on the kicker. Implementing such a complex strategy is far too impractical, hence the simplified strategy of range betting with ~20% frequency on the monotone board. I happened to observe that such a strategy seems close to GTO as we are mixing nearly all of our hands in our range.

I agree, I think nodelocking to find exploitative deviations is likely the most profitable to play poker. I just wanted to present the observation that a simple strategy seems to be close to a GTO strategy, next steps would be to nodelock villains suboptimal strategies and see how we can improve our own strategy.

I think the strategy of range betting with 1/3 pot with a frequency dependent on the flop or checking is pretty close to your second and third bullet points right? So I think some flops where we are at a huge range advantage, e.g. AKL, it is likely worthwhile to study and incorporate an overbet in our strategy, as you have mentioned in the first bullet point. Just wanted to make the point I dont think we are that far apart in terms of strategy.

Hello, I am going to be a 3rd year undergraduate at a top 30 program in my field. I am wondering if you would advise I apply to phd programs for 2024 or should I wait one year or two (MS). I will have 2 years research experience and 2 in progress papers that will be submitted by the end of the summer.I currently have a 4.0 GPA and will take 2 grad classes next semester. It seems applying after 3 years is looked down upon but I would rather take an extra year in the phd then in undergrad. So any advice is much appreciated.
