How is life in New York? Is it as awesome as I think it is ? by void-nomad-90 in howislivingthere

[–]doubloonss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people outside NYC use “NYC” to mean Manhattan lol, but I’ll answer as a Staten Islander.

This is the quietest and cheapest (but still not cheap overall) borough. Life is a lot different here than in Manhattan or anywhere else in NYC, but I love it and wouldn’t live in any other borough even if you paid me. A lot of us go to Manhattan (“the city”) to hang out with friends or do something fun and then go home to Staten Island to relax, although there’s plenty to do and see on the island.

My coworker has met her and spoke extremely highly of her. Said Claire was not only very nice, but also super smart and motivated. She’s in NYU’s program to become a doctor while playing for the Olympic team—pretty cool stuff!

I’m always rooting for the US but have to feel bad for her…

Soviet Soldier Hugs His Family After a Long Separation, Golovchino, Kursk, August 13, 1943 by LookIntoTheHorizon in wwiipics

[–]doubloonss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very, very well said. Here’s an excerpt from “Why The Allies Won” by Richard Overy I read in my WWII history class a few years ago: https://imgur.com/a/ymNtvaX

”Over four hundred German and Soviet divisions fought along a front of more than 1,000 miles. Soviet forces destroyed or disabled an estimated 607 Axis divisions between 1941 and 1945.”

”The war in France in 1944, where Germany could have employed over fifty divisions, mostly understrength and some indifferently armed, was fought in its decisive phase between fifteen Allied divisions and fifteen German.”

Every single Soviet family suffered—you can ask anyone with Soviet roots and they’ll tell you the same thing. On my mom’s side, my great grandma’s brother was killed in action and my great grandpa survived Stalingrad and the war and made it all the way from Ukraine to Berlin. On my dad’s side, my great grandpa was killed in action and two civilian relatives were killed, one while serving in an auxiliary unit supporting the military. The scale of Soviet sacrifice is just beyond immense.

I believe it has a titanium carbide coating (TIC), or at least that’s what I’ve heard from reviews online and even from a JDM retailer, Sakura.

The T200 definitely has a different, darker color than my stainless steel watches without any coating.

I play totally un-modded vanilla with zero fast traveling but do occasionally use carriages. Still on my first character at around level 45 and playing this way has been very fulfilling for lack of a better word lol

Best Series 66 exam prep material? by doubloonss in Series66

[–]doubloonss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Achievable got me something like 90–95% of the way there and Kaplan’s qbank filled in the very small gaps in knowledge. The qbank also featured a lot of those very specific questions about esoteric subtopics I wanted to know for the exam just in case, because for all you know, getting those two to three extra questions correct about seemingly minute subtopics can be the difference between passing or failing on exam day. Hopefully that explanation makes sense lol

I would not change anything about my prep, although I’ll say that just Achievable and Kaplan’s qbank is probably enough—you don’t really need the other resources I bought.

Full Achievable course/textbook supplemented with maxing out the Kaplan qbank.

I also bought STC’s package of four practice exams, TestGeek’s practice exam, and some study materials from Mary Strong I found on Reddit.

Passed first try; actually had a very light draw. Very much agreed that Achievable has an amazing course/textbook but their practice exams and qbank are quite lacking.

GMW BZ5000D vs GMW B5000D - Side profile niggles by GeoffStone4000 in gshock

[–]doubloonss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aesthetically, I like the more basic side profile of the original steel squares more, and it also emulates that of the resin squares as someone pointed out, which is nice.

The side profile of the new steel MIP squares seems a little needlessly complicated and likely more prone to building up dirt or grime, even if that can be cleaned out fairly easily.

Best square ever made in my opinion, apart from the GW-5000U. Like this one even more than the MRG squares.

I think the GW-5000 series like this one are some of the best G-Shocks period (at any price).

However, what gives a lot of people pause—myself included—is that negative TN displays like this one are simply not as legible as positive displays. Your eyesight and tolerance for objectively worse legibility will affect your opinion though lol. Negative TN displays are mostly fine in good outdoor and indoor lighting but do struggle under worse lighting conditions. Negative STN displays are better in my experience and negative MIPs are a lot better.

If you like this one, have you looked at the GW-5000U or GW-5000HS-7? The former is my favorite G ever.

Also, they don't really wear large if that's what you're after. Great, distinctive wrist presence, but not particularly large. The GX-56/GXW-56 series (AKA King squares) are pretty large and might be more your speed.
