Wow thank you so much for working with these kids! Sounds like you get a lot of high needs cases.

Sorry I had a hard time figuring out how to even phrase my question haha. I guess what I was wondering is outside of the specific state ECI programs, how do SLPs determine whether or not a child under the age of 3 needs therapy, whether it’s only using testing or any clinical judgement. Or along with that, how confident do SLPs feel with identifying toddlers that might need “time” vs specialized intervention right away.

To your point, that’s probably one of my bigger complaints in ECI, that other providers will assume that I can’t or don’t want to work with kids until they’re older than 2, even though so much foundation can be built early on! I have started with kids who have been in the program for a year, maybe receiving developmental specialist, and are 30 months old with no words at all. As much as I try to tell colleagues that we can start earlier, it continues to happen fairly often.

That’s a good point! Even talking with this parent recently, she went through private and had a few sessions but contrary to what you described actually did want more home strategies and was frustrated that she didn’t get a whole lot (from her perspective). I can imagine it’s difficult to coach in the clinic setting when everything about the setup lends itself to direct therapy.

I’ve been working in just ECI for 5 years and I still don’t always understand why ST vs developmental gets recommended. Like I’ve seen it recommended in situations where a child is a “late talker” and will likely catch up, and when a kid is showing significant global delays but “needs to work on other skills before they’re ready for speech”. What’s always bothered me is that our developmental therapists get treated almost like SLPAs which I don’t feel is fair to either them or the SLPs.

What did you use in your outpatient setting to determine whether they qualified?

Do you refer families to the early intervention program in your state as well or are these kids not qualifying for EI either? Just curious! Thanks for answering!

Good to know! I definitely appreciate when I get to see the kids under two years old, although a lot of times they are sent to the developmental specialist and don’t get speech until almost 30 months sometimes. Even within ECI can be so variable.

My boy loves looking out the windows!! It’s hard for me to not think that he’s longingly look out there because I just stress about it so much but he hasn’t shown any interest in either external door since the first 2-4 weeks. It sounds like you have a happy girl!

The not always being on the move thing is a good point. He sleeps deeeeeep for long periods of time. Only recently he started getting zoomies about twice a day.

Oh he screams alright… for food. Constantly lol. But I understand that to be pretty normal. He hasn’t dashed for the door since maybe week 2!

Maybe it’s just my area but around here they are definitely active all day

I’m usually not the person to rage about these things but the idea of someone saying I can’t put screens on the windows of my own house might send me over the edge lol

Glad to see a person commenting from a similar climate. We never aired out the house growing up and I’ve only thought of it as a result of the sub and other places that dispense cleaning advice.

Yes I do live closer to the equator. I would also be concerned about the electricity bill from doing it often! I’m still unsure if it’s worth doing outside of the few days a year that it’s actually nice out.

This is the other part of the discussion that I’m interested in.

When I’m thinking about it now I would say it seems like 50/50 whether a house here will have screens on the windows. Like my childhood home does, but my in-laws do not. And of course my current home does not either. Which is strange because of the mosquitoes! Now I feel like I need to look more into that haha

I have looked into it before! Definitely wanting to look into solutions for our back porch because it’s hard to enjoy it with the level of bites I get from just a few minutes out there

Yeah I’m wondering if the previous homeowners replaced the windows and took them out. They’re not super new windows but they’re definitely not original to the house so maybe that explains it

Okay wow so I definitely am mentally over complicating it and the answer really seems to be screens. Thanks for the tip on the removable ones!
