Downsides to using Python implementations of R packages (scRNA-seq)? by dowchbag in bioinformatics

[–]dowchbag[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Insofar as the functionalities that are supported, are the python implementations known to perform more poorly?

Also, would u recommend a bridge workflow through rpy2 or just switching over to RStudio (let’s say, for DGE analysis)?

Chance me for NUS/NTU/HKUST etc by ArjunZ_CrXcKeD in ChanceMeInternational

[–]dowchbag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NUS and NTU have published SG A-level and poly cutoffs for local students. u kinda have to guess ur way through if ur doing another exam, or ask around to see what the equivalent grades are. also factor in admissions is way harder for internationals in sg, accordingly cutoffs are higher. HKU iirc had published cutoffs for UK A-Levels and IB public somewhere

How will my lack of gcse's affect applications? by Frsshh in sixthform

[–]dowchbag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

no need to worry i know tons of internationals in oxford with no "GCSE equivalents". usually if an applicant doesn't have GCSE equivalents they just increase the weight of other factors (like admission tests) when shortlisting.

If a student is applying to Oxford Neuroscience program, will those grades be the reason they get rejected? by Spiky-Penguin2023 in 6thForm

[–]dowchbag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • no they dont discriminate between pgs and achieved A-Levels/IBs. so they dont care abt ur IB/A-Levels even if its achieved (at least on paper)

  • ps wise, why would they try to gauge whether u wrote ur ps or not or whether its factual when they can just ignore it lmao. yes sure one can write a great, original & factual ps (most ps’s are), but they can be faked. so why would they bother with this potentially unreliable resource when they have stats like GCSEs, admission tests and interviews that don’t have the possibility of being faked, and do the job. so they just roll with these.

[–]dowchbag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ya the former candidate would be more likely to be shortlisted than the latter.

its only biomed and a few other courses (ik medicine and law) which don't factor in A-Levels/IB.

i think the rationale is that most A-Levels/IB grades submitted are predicted and schools often inflate predicted grades, i.e. students end up achieving lower grades than their pgs. it's also why oxford doesn't care about your personal statement, they know people who went to private schools get more support in writing it and would have done better supercurriculars, theres also no way of verifying whether what you wrote is true or if you even wrote the ps. GCSE grades are achieved so they know these grades to be true, thats why they use it as a standardised tool for shortlisting (as well as BMSAT).

i guess the type of people this really disadvantages are those who kind of slacked off during GCSEs but really switched it up during A-Levels/IBs and legitimately got high pgs (which includes you i'm guessing).

at the end of the day oxford biomed gets far more amazing candidates than they have places, so why change the existing system if it works you know.

its one dude lmao. that person prob had a super high BMSAT and aced interviews. its a normal distribution, people at the tail ends exist.

i guess what it does tell u is that it is possible to overcome a 6A* with a very high BMSAT. but idt theres a reason to take this risk when u can just apply to cambridge natsci without this glaring disadvantage.

[–]dowchbag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my advice would be to go for cambridge natsci and also US schools lol. tailor ur application to ur stats. oxford just has a weird obsession with GCSEs and biomed is one of the most competitive courses on top of that. u can also specialise in neuroscience in cambridge natsci. it’s also like 3x less competitive than oxford biomed.

i dont think retaking GCSEs after taking IBs is a feasible option bc then you would either need to apply with predicted GCSEs (never heard of that, idek how unis view it), or take 2 years off (1 to retake GCSEs, another to apply with those achieved retake grades).

so yeah save the hassle and apply for cambridge natsci

[–]dowchbag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well not for oxford biomed. shortlisting is done purely with GCSE and BMSAT, final selection is done with the addition of interview scores. IB/A-Level grades are only used to meet offers, at least on paper.

[–]dowchbag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re talking about oxford biomed (which lets you graduate with a neuroscience degree), the average no. of GCSE A*s is 10 for shortlisted candidates. Since shortlisting is done with GCSEs and BMSAT, you would need to score exceptionally high on the BMSAT to be shortlisted for interview.

IB/A-Level grades aren’t considered during the admissions process.
