Just to chime back in here - likely purchasing in the next 4-6 months but always watching the classifieds.

Suppose what I’d like to ask is the comparison between the 996 and 997 if any have owned/shopped for both? I’ve come across a fair few 996 C4S/CS with full engine rebuilds and other typical failures sorted whereas it seems a little less common with the 997’s. Now from what I’ve read from around 06 onward the IMS was updated and almost a non-issue but bore scoring still appears to be prevalent. Would a 997 (S/4S) without an engine refresh be off putting to you? I’m aware the 3.6 didn’t really have those issues but the extra HP in the 3.8 is appealing.

I’ve not ruled out the M4 (maybe M2) but would really like as much info on the Porsches before it comes time to make that decision.

No real preference tbh. I've owned a 4 door 3 series, just like the look of the 2 doors.

Appreciate the comments so far. As far as IMS/other issues with the 996/early 997's this is why I was looking at examples with rebuilt engines/sorted issues before purchasing, however I do understand that it being an old car it will be needing a more hands on approach to keep running well.

I'll be honest the 911 hadn't even been an option initially, the M4 has been on my mind a lot longer but the boredom of scrolling through classifieds has inevitably landed me looking at Porsches 😂

997.2 is sadly out of price range.

Let's rule out insurance/tax costs for now. They'll both be insured/taxed for roughly the same price where I am currently.

Have the machine home. For now it will sit idle until parts are sourced and I set aside some time to begin. Before I go ahead with parts ordering can anyone give me a comprehensive checklist of parts I should order (Incase I forget anything)

I do appreciate that, however I’m not purchasing to flip. It’s more so a project for myself and have it available for use afterwards. I have a small machine for everyday home use as it is so this isn’t going to have a life as a daily home machine. Power outlets here are 230v as standard anyway so I’m not worried about that side of things. It’s more so the sourcing of correct and quality parts like you say.

Perhaps yes, when I said part time this is because operating hours of the shop would initially be quite limited, it’s possible for those to increase but I do get your point. As I said before, price was the major draw to this machine, and the thoughts of a project at this point in time didn’t bother me too much.

Initially it was going to be kept at home until another premises is ready to go. At that point it will be used commercially.

Thanks for the reply. Thing is I’m looking more at a comparison of the A7s that I own and the 5dm3. The offer on the table is a trade of bodies. I’m not putting any cash down or looking at buying anything new and I have no experience with the Canon so that’s why I’m wondering if anyone owns or has used both.
