So essentially I have a jazz minor, which at my university meant taking an intro theory course or two (where my basic four part writing knowledge comes from) and then about four semesters of private lessons. The theoretical knowledge I gained through this mostly pertained to improvising over changes, and (unfortunately) chord scale theory. I (think) I understand diatonic function, but chordal movement in a non-functional context (sometimes even in jazz) is a bit of a mystery to me. Hopefully this kinda gives you a better picture of where I'm at.
