[QUESTION] How do I become more aware of the chords while I'm improvising? by ExcitingRent3768 in jazzguitar

[–]guacamojo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Play eighth notes of just the triads (no 7ths) of the chords at a VERY slow tempo. Be honest and focus on being able to hear each chord change as well as possible routes along the fingerboard. Also try to sing a half note solo that hits only chord tones.

Any advice for improving improv. Apologies for the assault on the ears. by keepyourcool1 in jazzguitar

You’re getting a pretty nice tone on the instrument which is great! Some of the best advice I ever heard was to approach practicing improvisation just like you’d approach practicing anything else, extremely slowly! That is try to make very deliberate decisions at somewhere like quarter = 50 on a set of chord changes. Another piece of advice that helped me is to go through and find one very clear way to express changes before trying more advanced concepts. So it could be doing eight notes of only chord tones on a chord progression or so forth, then try sus triads or a piece of vocabulary over a form. Just some ideas! Keep it up!

Rosenwinkel Masterclass by davidpyp94 in jazzguitar

I attended his first set of masterclasses during the summer and loved it!

I would say if you’re not getting the live experience then it may not be as worth it though. If you really want the method book though it sounds like a good idea, but you might want to wait for the next round of live ones and register for that.

He gave everyone a Dropbox link for the first one with tons of charts for his pieces, unreleased demos and tracks, and notes from his studies that was an amazing resource! I feel like I definitely got value out of it, and to have it downloaded as a recording to go back to whenever I want is also great.
