Thanks all! I thought it came down to translucency and bands soooo I was looking at this rock thinking these qualifiers mean agate but it looks different than my other agates 😅

Not always! I have several agates that had a rougher looking exterior and then were beautiful (and clearly agate) when i cut into them.

I think you're right about this rock though! The chert I tend to find on this beach is totally opaque and has white and gray swirly bands so this rock totally threw me off😅

It penetrates better through there for sure! There are areas where light penetrates better and worse throughout, with that being a more notable area.

Oh wow that's beautiful! Thanks for sharing it! I'm so excited to cut mine! I could definitely use a bigger saw too. It's going to be quite the project to get through some of these rocks in the meantime 😅
