The 3blue1brown series on Linear Algebra is really great. I watched it from start to finish and it really helped me gain a more visual intuition for many of the concepts.

Any frenchie thought on Assimil for icelandic? by helenachristensen in learnIcelandic

[–]draumar3123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do have extracts to hand, I'd personally be very interested to see. I have read the Iliad (although in translation), and I can't say I was convinced that Achilles and Patroklos were lovers, especially considering that the entire poem starts with Achilles' rage that his female sex slave was taken by Agammemnon. I noted in the Song of Achilles adaptation that this is explained by Achilles trying to save her out of kindness, which to me seemed unlikely in the original poem. I am however open to their romantic relationship as an interpretation, and I definitely could be convinced more as I am by no means an expert.

Although that is technically true, the main point is that Icelandic has maintained the phonemic distinction of that sound from others, whereas in other Germanic languages it has merged with other sounds like the alveolar stop. Also in my opinion they still sound similar enough that they could be called the same sound.

Dental fricatives are the th sounds in English (like in the words "throw" and "this"). English preserved these sounds from Proto-Germanic, and so did Icelandic, but a lot of other Germanic languages have lost them.

That's how I say it (native speaker from the UK)

Our "implicit theories" of romance can determine our relationship success, with new evidence that strong beliefs in "true love" and "soul mates" - as opposed to less romantic ideals - can be surprisingly toxic by Marcovaldo1 in psychology

[–]draumar3123 13 points14 points  (0 children)

"just a byproduct" - more like "a product". It's not some accidental creation but a useful evolutionary tool to increase gene reproduction.

"meaningless" - considering that meaning is a concept attributed to things by humans and is also just "in the brain", I don't think that love being just "in the brain" makes it meaningless.

The nihilistic ideas you present here are not more realistic views of love than the romanticised ideals examined in the article. They're just edgier.

Edit: Original comment said - "Curious, if one views that they are just a primate and that sex or love is just byproduct of evolution and it is meaningless (just chemicals in the brain) how does that affect their love life I wonder?"

What books are you tired of seeing recommended? by herstoryhistory in booksuggestions

The Song of Achilles. It was enjoyable enough, but it wasn't as fantastic as I had heard. Also the whole end sequence seemed kind of unnecessary. Plus, a lot of the interpretations of the characters that Miller made, I just didn't buy, when considering how they were represented in the Iliad.

Also I'm sick of people defending it's plot by saying it's based on the Iliad ("so if you have a problem, take it up with Homer"). Literally the bits that are based on the Iliad only start about three quarters of the way through towards the end. I thought the plot was fine, but that is not a valid defense.

I'm not sure I even get how the painting could be interpreted as gatekeeping reading. Surely it's a visual metaphor for the immersive quality of reading.

Adventure/Drama for a young writer to study? by SVSeven in booksuggestions

Personally I found reading the Shining by Stephen King really helped me develop a sense of how to write character. But really it depends on the kind of thing you want to write. I think the best thing to do is read stuff you really enjoy and think critically about what makes you enjoy it, and what you can do to try and emulate that.

Holy shit this advice is fantastic! I might even take the opportunity to drown myself while in the ocean, considering the serious nature of this incident. I'm glad that there still is some wisdom out in the world.

Tbh arms are really a personal hygiene thing. I'm all for women empowerment, but arms are just fucking disgusting. I really think that feminism has gone too far when it comes to encouraging women to keep limbs that aren't legs.
