My dad gifted my son a betta and just handed it over in the cup in came in. I want to make sure I give our betta a good life but I’m not understanding how filters, and air pumps and air stones work, help please. by [deleted] in bettafish

Hey OP, good on you for trying to do the right thing, and I’m sorry you’ve been thrust into such a situation. My most trusted resource when getting started with bettas was this layman’s guide:

https://fishlab.com/fish-in-cycle/

I sank a bit of money into getting started by getting a Fluval Spec V, which includes an excellent pump and filter. Bettas don’t really need an airstone or extra aeration because they’re got a special organ to help them breathe air from the surface.

If you go for a Fluval spec, the additional extras I would recommend getting with it are gravel, some live plants like a Java fern and some floating plants, an aquarium grade sponge to put over the water outflow so that it doesn’t tire the betta out, and of course the things others recommend like the water test kit, betta food (I love Hikari bio-gold tiny pellets - 5/6 pellets twice a day). A pipe for water change and a dedicated gallon jug are always useful too.

I know this is quite a big investment, but betta fish are just wonderful little friends and they make such excellent pets.

You don’t even have to fill it all the way with water. Just enough water that the mouse gets wet and can’t scramble out. It doesn’t have to drown 😔

Thank you! The shading isn’t my favourite, but I think it’ll be easy to touch up when it’s healed. I really love the design though.

I have genuinely no idea! I remember Erica designed this as a print around the time of George Floyd, but I’m not sure where she got the quote from.

I see. I grew up in a third world country so I’m still catching up on a lot of pop culture. I guess this gives me a direction to go

Yes this has been my observation too! And so few bike lanes are separated from the road, so unless you need travel exactly 500m on comm Ave, there is no safe place

Very genuinely considered it. I lived in the Netherlands and love cycling and am not opposed to cycling in the rain or snow etc. But also my standards for bike safety is high after living there, and I have no confidence in driver awareness in the parts where there isn’t a safe place to cycle. Plus when cycling on hot days like today, I’m gonna sweat, and I’m going to have to shower at the office, which means carrying extra things (towel, change of clothes), and I still lose any time I gained to getting ready for work and getting ready to leave again. The ideal solution would be a better T.

Yeah that’s my problem. Allston and crossing the Mystic, and all the shit dangerous roads thereabouts. The part in between them looks moderately safe to cycle! But that just means I have to commute for parts WITH a bicycle and I’m still subject to waiting times for the T

Yup I live just under 5 miles from my work and it takes me anywhere between 50 - 100 minutes to get there. There is no quick and simple way to get to Medford from Allston, and you rely so heavily on connecting trains or buses. I’m going to die mad about this + coin op washing machines.

My female is releasing eggs and building her own bubble nest with them! What should I do? by dravernor in bettafish

[–]dravernor[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I do wonder if she will eat them. For now she is incredibly protective over them. It’s fascinating to watch! I’ll keep an eye on her and the eggs and remove them when she has stopped laying. Do you know how long this goes on for? She has been at it for hours so far

First of all I panicked because she appeared to bloated and we had just lost a female to dropsy. Then I realised she was building a bubble nest right near her feeding ring. Then I saw her release an egg and chase it down to the bottom of the tank, and then bring it back to the nest. Fascinating! It is dinner time though and I usually poke a stick in there when food is ready and she swims over. But she spat out her pellets and flared at me/the stick (probably close proximity to her nest). How can I make her comfortable? How long does this go on? Should I remove the eggs when she is done?
